Kansas City's Unique Barbecue Championship Brings Flavor to Weston with Holladay Distillery

A Celebration of Barbecue in Weston

The 4th Annual Made for KC BBQ Championship kicked off in Weston, Missouri, marking one of Kansas City’s most unique and exciting events. Hosted by Holladay Distillery, this year’s championship features 47 top barbecue teams from the region, all eager to showcase their culinary prowess. The event unfolds on August 21-22, filling the historic downtown area with the inviting aroma of smoked meats and grilling excitement.

The festivities began on Friday with a VIP event hosted at the beautiful grounds of Holladay Distillery, setting the stage for the competition that continues overnight as teams prepare for the main event on Saturday. This championship is not just about competition; it’s a cultural celebration of Kansas City’s vibrant barbecue scene, which is renowned across the country.

A Unique Opportunity

Created by OHM Concession Group in collaboration with the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), the Made for KC BBQ Championship aims to elevate the barbecue culture of Kansas City while providing local pitmasters a platform to shine. Participants vie for a $33,500 total purse, with the Grand Champion winning $10,000 and the chance to become the featured pitmaster at the Made for KC BBQ Experience at the Kansas City International Airport for 18 months, starting March 1, 2027. This opportunity allows the winning team to share their recipes and techniques with travelers from around the globe, placing Kansas City’s barbecue talent in the spotlight like never before.

Patrick Fee, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Holladay Distillery, expressed excitement about the event, stating, "Hosting the Made for KC BBQ Championship is precisely the kind of opportunity we're proud to bring to Weston. This competition showcases the craftsmanship and traditions that make our region special."

In previous years, Weston and Holladay Distillery have successfully hosted this championship, proving to be an ideal backdrop for such a flavorful event. In 2024, Meat Rushmore BBQ of Lee's Summit took home the Grand Champion title and then showcased their skills at the Made for KC BBQ Experience, truly embodying the spirit of Kansas City barbecue.

A Distillation of History and Tradition

Founded in 1856, Holladay Distillery celebrates its 170th anniversary this year while remaining true to its roots on the original site. The distillery is renowned for its Holladay Bourbon, which pairs perfectly with the barbecue culinary tradition.

"Bourbon and barbecue have always been a natural pairing," noted Fee, reflecting on the historical connection between the distillery and the local barbecue scene. The distillery not only occupies an important space in the spirit industry but also serves as a cornerstone of the region's history and community.

The Future of Kansas City Barbecue

With the Made for KC BBQ Experience having launched at the new airport terminal in 2023, the championship brings a unique opportunity for competition pitmasters. This venue provides a rare chance for them to showcase their culinary masterpieces in a place where thousands of travelers will experience the flavors of Kansas City. Each Grand Champion will be featured at the airport every 18 months, offering new recipes and flavors for visitors to savor.

As the event unfolds, both locals and visitors gather to celebrate not just the food but the community that surrounds it. The Made for KC BBQ Championship is more than just an event; it's a communal gathering that honors the rich barbecue heritage of Kansas City and the people who make it shine. Everyone’s welcome to partake in the celebrations, whether they are seasoned barbecue enthusiasts or simply curious about the delicious culture of Kansas City’s barbecue tradition.

With anticipation building and smoke billowing from the pits, the 4th Annual Made for KC BBQ Championship promises not just competition but a remarkable celebration of flavor, community, and history.
