Experience the Intersection of Art and Urbanism at YAU OPEN STUDIO 2026 in Tokyo

YAU OPEN STUDIO 2026: A Fusion of Creativity and Urban Life

From March 13 to 15, 2026, the vibrant districts of Otemachi, Marunouchi, and Yurakucho in Tokyo will host the YAU OPEN STUDIO. This engaging three-day event will display approximately ten innovative programs that highlight the ongoing activities of YAU (Yurakucho Art Urbanism).

A Dynamic Platform for Artistic Innovation

YAU is dedicated to blending art with urban living, creating a unique space for innovative ideas to flourish. Over four years, from 2022 to early 2026, 1,356 artists have made their mark in the Otemachi-Marunouchi-Yurakucho area, known for its robust economic activity. With a focus on sustainable and creative urban initiatives, YAU redefines urbanism through the lens of art. This year's OPEN STUDIO is set to feature programs such as:
  • - 'Holes' Presentation by the Zenigame Sewer Research Project in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Sewerage Bureau, investigating the critical yet often overlooked infrastructure that supports urban life.
  • - 'Reknit the City' by TALK NONSENSE, exploring urban creative interventions based on knitting, an embodied act and production process. This project will allow participants to engage in workshops and exhibits that encourage public interaction.
  • - 'Discomfort Depository' by the All-Human Inquiry Project, a participatory art initiative utilizing public telephones to collect and respond to everyday feelings of unease, fostering new dialogues through shared discomfort.
These programs promise to immerse visitors in lively discussions, workshops, and artistic expressions, all aimed at experiencing the cultural heartbeat of the Otemachi-Marunouchi area.

Rediscovering Urban History

The Otemachi, Marunouchi, and Yurakucho districts, collectively known as 'Daimaru-yu,' have long stood as a cornerstone of Japan's business landscape, encompassing around 5,000 businesses and hosting about 350,000 workers. However, recent trends show that this once primarily corporate area is becoming a melting pot of diversity, attracting both local residents and international tourists alike.

Currently, significant redevelopment projects transform the skyline of this iconic area, introduced through initiatives that focus on sustainability and creating a financial and business hub for the future. These changes prompt a reassessment of the urban environment and how history, tourism, and daily life intersect.

Creative Adaptation through YAU's Approach

YAU operates with an ethos aimed at reimagining urban spaces through art, employing a team of 19 professionals from diverse backgrounds, including artists, editors, architects, and photographers. This team adapts to the evolving urban landscape, finding new venues and opportunities within the community. Recently, YAU functions primarily in the underground space beneath the Tokyo Expressway.

YAU OPEN STUDIO not only showcases artistic endeavors but invites interactions that reflect the community's complexity and dynamism.

Additional Programming

  • - Knitting Workshops: Participate actively in the urban knitting project hosted by TALK NONSENSE.
  • - Artistic Discussions and Panels: Engage with artists on topics surrounding contemporary art and urbanism.
  • - Exhibitions: Enjoy a variety of displays that embody the themes of urbanism and creativity.

This year's OPEN STUDIO promises to be a remarkable crossroads of art, inquiry, and community engagement.
