Peter Quintanilla's New Role Enhances U.S. Transportation Infrastructure Aesthetics

Peter Quintanilla, the Vice President of the Design Hub at Michael Baker International, has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Beautifying Transportation Infrastructure Council. His new role, which falls under the leadership of U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, aims at enhancing the aesthetic value of the nation’s transportation systems, including highways, bridges, and transit hubs.

This newly formed council serves as an advisory body that focuses on policy recommendations, design principles, and funding priorities that enhance the beauty of infrastructure while ensuring safety and operational efficiency. Quintanilla will contribute significantly to identifying best practices, constructing aesthetic performance metrics, and advising on projects designed to improve public spaces, reflecting the character of local communities.

In his words, Quintanilla noted, "Transportation infrastructure is more than just a network for moving people and goods. As a key aspect of the built environment, it profoundly influences urban design and community dynamics. Thoughtful design can reinforce community identity, promote safety, and enhance daily life for the public utilizing these infrastructures."

Over a career spanning 27 years in architecture, urban design, and planning, Quintanilla leads Michael Baker's Design Hub. His team focuses on integrating urban design with environmental sustainability and community-centric planning, creating spaces that not only serve functional needs but also enhance the livability of neighborhoods. His expertise covers various prominent projects, ranging from community engagement to master planning.

Quintanilla's acclaimed portfolio includes various national and international projects. Noteworthy accomplishments involve designing the Sideling Hill Service Plaza Trailhead in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, and developing Central Park in East Palestine, Ohio, through collaboration with local officials and freight railroad operator Norfolk Southern. He was also instrumental in revitalizing Lincoln Square in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, expanding pedestrian areas while preserving its historical charm.

Quintanilla's experience includes nearly five years as Director of Design for the Prince’s Foundation for Building Communities in England. Under the auspices of the Prince of Wales, he managed projects across several countries, including Jamaica, China, Korea, Ecuador, and the UK. His international work includes the redesign of ShiJia Hutong in Beijing into a museum and creating sustainable solutions in the Galapagos Islands, addressing tourism impacts while preserving the unique environment.

His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Master's Degree in Architecture from the University of Miami. His commitment to urban design and planning is reflected in his active involvement on several influential boards and committees, including the Executive Committee of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and the City of Pittsburgh Planning Commission.
