NEU Battery Materials Secures $7.6 Million Funding to Boost LFP Battery Recycling
NEU Battery Materials, a Singapore-based company dedicated to material security, has successfully closed an oversubscribed funding round, raising US$7.6 million. This funding will be pivotal in scaling up lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery recycling and enhancing the resilience of lithium supply chains globally.
The investment round was co-led by Shift4Good, a global venture capital firm working to drive decarbonization in the transport and energy sectors, alongside SGInnovate, a Deep Tech investor supported by the Singapore government. The participation also included new entities like Lotus Singapore Group and M7 Holdings, along with existing investors such as Paragon Ventures I.
This financing comes on the heels of NEU's newly established factory in Singapore, capable of recycling up to 1,300 tons of LFP batteries per year. The factory represents a significant leap from research and development to industrial-scale operations. The capital acquired through this funding will be utilized to increase production of battery-grade lithium from various LFP sources, including cathode production scraps and end-of-life black mass. Moreover, it will facilitate the company's international expansion efforts.
The need for LFP batteries has been soaring, with LFPs comprising over 90% of global battery energy storage systems and more than 55% of all electric vehicle (EV) batteries, as reported by the International Energy Agency. As battery use and manufacturing surge worldwide, effective and scalable recycling solutions are becoming vital to reinforce industrial capabilities and secure essential lithium supply chains.
Bryan Oh, Co-founder and CEO of NEU Battery Materials, stated, "Our vision is to establish cleaner and more resilient lithium supply chains for the ongoing energy transition. The commissioning of our Singapore plant is an important milestone in that journey. The funding will catalyze the scale-up and deployment of our modular LFP recycling technology, allowing us to expand the production of vital battery-grade lithium at increasingly lower costs for our customers."
NEU has developed an innovative electrochemical redox targeting technology, which is the first of its kind globally, specifically designed to close the loop on LFP batteries. This technology makes the lithium recovery process not only scalable and cost-efficient but also more sustainable than traditional recycling methods, such as hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. The new process significantly reduces waste and environmental impact, achieving emissions reductions of up to 83%.
Sebastien Guillaud, Co-founder and Managing Partner at Shift4Good, emphasized the importance of LFP battery recycling, stating, "It is both a decarbonization and an industrial sovereignty imperative. NEU has crafted a unique solution for battery-grade lithium recovery from LFP feedstock and is now entering a crucial phase of industrial scale-up, thereby contributing to building more resilient supply chains."
With the recent funding and the new plant operational, NEU aims to ramp up production, lower costs, and expand its partnership network. This initiative is supported by a robust R&D roadmap, which has already achieved significant technical milestones ahead of schedule, laying a solid groundwork for international deployment and sustained commercial growth.
In conclusion, NEU Battery Materials is making marked strides towards enhancing the sustainability of lithium supply chains through innovative recycling technology and strategic funding, ultimately positioning itself as a key player in the ongoing global energy transition.
