Okayama University Hosts Seminar with Professor Sawako Shirahase from The University of Tokyo

A Seminar to Inspire the Future

On October 8th, 2025, Okayama University organized an inspiring seminar at its Tsushima Campus's Co-Creation Innovation Lab (KIBINOVE) with Professor Sawako Shirahase from the University of Tokyo, drawing approximately 25 eager participants. Professor Shirahase, a distinguished sociologist with prolific experience, including roles as a Vice President at The University of Tokyo and a Senior Vice President at the United Nations University, shared her insights with the students, offering them a chance to reflect on their futures.

Insights from a Pioneer in Academia

The seminar began with an engaging lecture by Professor Shirahase, where she discussed her international experiences and the challenges faced by women in building successful careers. She emphasized the importance of being evaluated not solely on gender or nationality. “To be recognized as an individual, it’s essential to possess your unique strengths. Additionally, it’s crucial to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds and collaborate as a team,” she stated thoughtfully.

Following her talk, a lively Q&A session took place, moderated by Michinobu Kano, Vice Director of Okayama University. Students actively engaged with thought-provoking questions like, “How can I forge a unique path as a researcher?” and “Why should we pursue humanities studies in an age dominated by AI?” This exchange extended beyond the scheduled time, highlighting the enthusiasm and curiosity of the participants.

Student Reflections on the Experience

Post-seminar, students expressed their appreciation for the unique atmosphere KIBINOVE provided, which facilitated open dialogue. Comments like, “KIBINOVE feels more liberating than other classrooms, making it easy to express ourselves,” and “I gained numerous insights, broadening my interests,” were common. One student articulated a critical perspective, challenging dichotomous thinking on the balance between family and career: “It’s vital to recognize that there’s always a middle ground.”

The university's commitment to fostering varied learning opportunities through KIBINOVE continues as they aim to expand students' horizons. Those attending can wholeheartedly look forward to more events that enhance learning and community engagement.
