Kochi City: Returning to the Top

Kochi City has regained its title as the most livable city in Kochi Prefecture. The capital city, located in the central and southern region of the prefecture, boasts an array of commercial establishments and restaurants around Kochi Station, including a cinema. The city is well-equipped with public transportation options, including JR lines and trams, enhancing its transport convenience. Additionally, Kochi City is home to many historical sites including temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage route, several remnants of the Tosa clan, and the iconic Kochi Castle, making it a popular tourist destination.

Sakawa Town: A Rising Star

Sakawa Town has impressively moved up the rankings from fifth to second. This town, located in the western part of the prefecture, retains the charming atmosphere of a historic castle town, complete with traditional merchant houses and sake breweries. It received top marks in three categories: "Quietness and Safety," "Friendliness," and "Cost of Living and Rent," reflecting its high overall livability.

Living Comfort Rankings are compiled from responses gathered over five years (2021 to 2025). If the number of respondents does not meet the stipulated minimum of 50, data from 2020 or even 2019 may be included.

1. Kochi City - Achieved first place for six consecutive years.
2. Tokyo's 23 Wards - Maintained second place for four years in a row.
3. Osaka City - Retained third place for two years.
4. Takamatsu City and Kobe City - Both ranked equally in four place.

Continuing Popularity of Kochi City

Kochi City has now secured the top position for six consecutive years in the "Desired City Rankings." The second place is held by Tokyo's 23 Wards, while Osaka City ranks third for the second consecutive year. Takamatsu City and Kobe City, each remain strong contenders, sharing the fourth spot.

In a striking reflection of resident sentiment, 77.7% of respondents expressed a positive view towards their current residence. Specifically, 56.1% reported not having a particular city they wished to live in, while 21.6% indicated they wanted to continue living in their current town.

The survey was conducted using an online questionnaire distributed and collected by Macromill, utilizing their registered monitoring panel.

Respondent Profile

The study gathered responses from 3,926 individuals over the age of 20 residing in Kochi Prefecture from 2021 to 2025 (with some responses from 2020 and 2019 included separately). The gender breakdown of respondents was 47.8% male and 52.2% female, with 42.8% unmarried and 57.2% married. Out of those surveyed, 55% had children.
