The Rise of Online Scams: A Turning Point in Cybersecurity
Recent research from Akamai's
2026 State of the Internet Report, powered by
Bolster AI's threat intelligence, has unveiled a notable shift in the landscape of cybercrime. For the first time, the volume of online scams has outstripped traditional phishing attacks. This trend signals a fundamental change in the tactics that adversaries are adopting to exploit consumers and businesses alike.
In the reporting period,
online scam detections surged dramatically, doubling from 3.2 million to 6.4 million. In contrast, the average lifespan of a phishing attack has remarkably decreased, plummeting by over 50%. Rod Schultz, CEO of Bolster AI, emphasizes that while credential theft remains a pressing issue, cybercriminals are now more frequently abusing the trust that consumers place in established brands to commit direct financial fraud.
Key Findings from the Report
The findings, derived from threat intelligence collected between July 2025 and June 2026, pinpoint three major trends that are reshaping the cyber threat landscape:
1. Scams Overtake Phishing
The shift towards direct financial fraud is evident, as online scams surpassed phishing detections for the first time in Q1 2026. This indicates a worrying trend where counterfeit storefronts, investment scams, and payment fraud take precedence over traditional phishing attacks.
2. Shorter Lifespan of Phishing Attacks
The longevity of phishing attacks has reduced significantly. In the fourth quarter of 2025, spam would persist for an average of 48.3 days; however, by the second quarter of 2026, this duration drastically fell to only 22 days. Such reduced attack lifespans hinder security teams' ability to track and neutralize threats effectively.
3. Multi-Channel Fraud Operations
Cybercriminals are leveraging sophisticated techniques, including
AI-generated content and localized social engineering, to execute operations across various platforms. These tactics complicate the ability of security teams to detect and dismantle organized fraud operations since they span websites, social media, digital advertisements, and more.
Despite these alarming trends, traditional phishing is not on the verge of extinction. Bolster AI’s research notes a 61% increase in phishing detections by Q2 2026, highlighting a troubling expansion of cybercriminal strategies rather than a mere substitution.
Protecting Brand Trust Beyond Internal Security
As cybercriminals shift their focus toward exploiting digital interactions between businesses and their clientele, the threat to brand trust escalates. Scams targeting legitimate companies can infiltrate without breaching internal systems, thus risking customer trust and financial stability. The need for connected threat detection across digital channels becomes paramount. This requires a shift from merely addressing individual malicious sites to combating the foundational infrastructure of coordinated fraud initiatives.
Bolster AI’s state-of-the-art threat protection solutions allow organizations to scrutinize a vast array of digital environments, encompassing domains, websites, social networks, and online marketplaces. By doing so, they assist security teams in identifying potential threats targeting both their brands and customers effectively.
“
The essence of future cybersecurity lies not merely in safeguarding the organization's internal systems but also in preserving the trust that businesses cultivate with their customers,” remarks Rod Schultz. The collaboration between Bolster AI and Akamai in generating these insights signifies the ongoing evolution of digital threats and the necessity for enhanced cybersecurity measures.
