Hefei Blends Modern Technology With Traditional Chinese Opera to Create a Cultural Renaissance
Hefei's Journey: From Tech Hub to Cultural Icon
Hefei, the capital of Anhui province in eastern China, is not just known for its advancements in technology and new-energy vehicles. The city is on a mission to breathe new life into traditional Chinese opera, merging its well-known reputation as a tech hub with a rich cultural heritage. With a population exceeding 10 million, Hefei aims to carve out a distinct identity that celebrates both modernity and tradition.
In 2025, Hefei launched the innovative initiative called "Hundred Operas in Anhui — Starry Hefei." This ambitious project seeks to promote the appreciation of traditional Chinese opera while positioning the city as a central location for national art exchanges. The initiative has already proven successful, featuring 101 performances across 36 different opera genres from all corners of China. Local Anhui troupes have contributed 150 performances, showcasing the depth of talent within the region.
Among the many impressive figures emerging from this initiative, over 400 acclaimed actors have taken to the stage, including 53 winners of the prestigious Plum Blossom Prize, which is considered the highest honor in Chinese theater. This level of participation underscores the commitment to reviving and modernizing the art form.
The response from audiences has been extraordinary. Each show has sold out rapidly, with an impressive occupancy rate of 86%. With ticket prices starting as low as 10 yuan (approximately $1.60), the events have become widely accessible, allowing more people to enjoy the rich tradition of Chinese opera.
Adding another layer to this initiative, Hefei has embraced an "opera tourism" model where ticket holders also enjoy free entry to notable heritage sites, including Mount Huangshan and the city’s key attractions. This unique approach has attracted more than 74,000 visitors to what can be described as immersive “opera and scenery” tours, leading to significant boosts in local tourism and spending.
Notably, the initiative resonates strongly with younger audiences, particularly Generation Z. Data shows that individuals under 40 comprise 73.9% of the audience, while those under 30 account for 44.4%. This trend is partly driven by outreach programs that integrate traditional arts into student life. Students from across the country are now experiencing the beauty of Anhui’s opera culture, with many expressing enthusiasm for the accessibility of performances. A student from Inner Mongolia, Yu Haoshen, remarked, “Ever since I started school here, I’ve wanted to experience Anhui’s opera culture. The initiative allows me to enjoy wonderful performances from all over the country without having to travel around.”
The international appeal of this cultural renaissance has not gone unnoticed either. Over 80 foreign nationals from more than a dozen countries have participated in the events, breaking down language barriers while fostering a shared appreciation for traditional arts. In 2026, Hefei collaborated with China Media Group to host the Opera Soulmate Conference, aiming to engage global youth further. There are even plans in motion for the groundbreaking of the China Opera Museum, promising to expand the city’s cultural landscape even further in the future.
Utilizing its technological strengths, Hefei is constructing a digital ecosystem for traditional opera led by the Anhui Hundred Operas Center and supported by six professional theaters. This fusion of technology and tradition reflects Hefei’s forward-thinking approach to cultural preservation and innovation.
Hefei’s tremendous efforts to revitalize Chinese opera signify a promising model for other cities aiming to preserve their cultural heritage while embracing the future. As the capital of Anhui province continues to redefine itself, it stands at the forefront of an inspiring movement that blends the old with the new, ensuring the survival and evolution of traditional Chinese arts for generations to come.
