Huawei SPN Revolutionizes Yunnan Power Grid with Next-Gen High-Speed Network

Addressing Bottlenecks: Bandwidth Challenges and Solutions
The requirement for advanced bandwidth solutions forms the basis of Huawei's SPN deployment. Starting from a pilot program in 2022, SPN has rapidly evolved from a technical trial to an integrated framework across 16 cities in Yunnan. A significant achievement of this new network is the resolution of bandwidth limitations, allowing for a staggering increase in capacity from the previous standards of 155 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s.
Notably, the upgrades have facilitated an increase in bandwidth at access levels—including substations and client centers—to 1 Gbit/s, in compliance with the standards set by the China Southern Power Grid. Aggregation and core layers now have bandwidth capacities soaring up to 50 Gbit/s or even 100 Gbit/s, depending on the capacity requirements of specific sites. This revamped system means transmission lines can afford finely granulated data throughput starting from just 10 Mbit/s for secure, private electrical lines, thus bolstering high-bandwidth services such as video surveillance and ensuring smooth transitions across various platforms.
The improvements in bandwidth not only expand capabilities but significantly enhance the efficiency of inspections and maintenance as well. The SPN solution allows real-time monitoring of service level agreements (SLAs) concerning latency and packet loss, and enables fault localization within mere minutes, which drastically cuts down maintenance costs associated with SDH equipment failures.
For instance, at the Qujing Power Supply Office, the time for inspections has been slashed from over 30 minutes to just three minutes, while the total maintenance cycle has collapsed from more than seven hours to just 21 minutes. Additionally, the operational management center can now detect key defects up to 15 days early due to strategically placed monitoring points.
Intelligent Service and Long-Term Protection
Integrating intelligent transport capabilities is another core feature of Huawei's SPN solution. It adeptly manages a broad spectrum of services in the energy sector, ranging from latency-sensitive teleprotection and distribution management to handling data-heavy streams like video traffic, ensuring reliability across the board. Utilizing advanced technologies such as FlexE hard and soft slicing ensures strict isolation among services while optimizing bandwidth reutilization.
Moreover, the dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 setup offers flexibility for local forwarding while enabling easy connectivity to the Internet of Things (IoT). This seamless integration supports vital functions such as monitoring transmission lines and interfacing between generation, grid, load, and storage systems.
A distinct advantage of the SPN solution is its long-term investment protection. The design permits scalable speed enhancements from 25 Gbit/s all the way to 400 Gbit/s through low-cost updates, effectively avoiding the need for repeated construction interventions.
