Rwanda's Leap into Smart Education

On October 3rd, 2025, Rwanda and Huawei celebrated a significant milestone in the country's educational transformation. The Smart Education Project finished its first phase with the official launch of the DigiTruck initiative at Kagarama High School in Kigali. These projects signify Rwanda's commitment to integrating technology into education and empowering its citizens with essential digital skills.

The Smart Education Project aims to revolutionize teaching and learning experiences across Rwanda by connecting 1,500 schools with high-speed internet. This initiative also includes the development of two advanced data centers and a designated education network to facilitate digital learning nationwide. Minister of Education Joseph Nsengimana expressed, "Today's celebration is a testament to our unwavering commitment to inclusive, technology-driven education. These initiatives not only foster international cooperation but also promote digital equity and sustainable national development." With this initiative, nearly 1.5 million students now have the opportunity to access high-quality educational resources, thereby narrowing the educational gap between urban and rural areas. Jin Jiqing, Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Rwanda, highlighted the project's impact, stating, "A student in Kigali can now share knowledge remotely with peers in Rusizi. This is the true essence of digital inclusion, breaking barriers and enabling every child to dream bigger."

To complement the Smart Education Project, the DigiTruck initiative was introduced. This mobile, solar-powered classroom aims to provide free, tailored digital skills training to underserved communities, particularly focusing on out-of-school youth, girls, and farmers. The equipped DigiTruck carries laptops, internet access, and essential digital learning tools, enabling expert trainers to provide education even in remote communities without reliable power or internet access.

Eraste Rurangwa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT and Innovation in Rwanda, remarked, "The DigiTruck initiative is not just about providing technology; it serves as a pathway to opportunity and empowerment for Rwanda's future as a knowledge-driven economy." The goal is to train 1 million Rwandans within three years, with the DigiTruck traveling across all 30 districts of the nation to reach 5,000 individuals. Huawei's TECH4ALL DigiTrucks have previously trained over 17,000 people across seven countries, covering crucial topics like device use, office software applications, online job applications, and even coding and robotics.
