Motonosuke Takes the Stage: A New Comic Journey in 'Le gai mariage'
Motonosuke, a rising star in the film industry, is set to make his stage debut alongside renowned kyogen actor Manjō Nomura in the contemporary French comedy,
Le gai mariage. This exciting production promises a delightful mix of humor and satire, captivating audiences once more as it makes its way back to the stage. The play, penned by Gérard Bitton and Michel Mardegan, has been met with enthusiasm since it first premiered in Japan at the Roppongi Tricolore Theater in March-April 2023.
The Japanese production is an adaptation of a popular French boulevard comedy that has garnered much acclaim, including a nomination for the prestigious Molière Award for Best Comedy in 2011. The theatrical version, translated by Masakazu Iwakiri, has been warmly received by Japanese audiences, leading to a string of successful performances through October 2024 and September 2025. With a fresh cast joining the lineup, the intention is to present this vibrant narrative in a Staged Reading format, allowing more people to experience its charm.
The Plot
The play revolves around the character Henri de Sassy, a charming bachelor notorious for his love for women yet completely uninterested in marriage. Unexpectedly, he discovers that he stands to inherit a fortune of 100,000 euros left by his late Aunt Yvonne, with one huge caveat: he must marry within a year. Faced with the daunting task of choosing just one woman from his multitude of friends, Henri is in a bind.
In a creative twist, his lawyer friend Norbert proposes a plan involving a sham same-sex marriage with his dearest friend Dodo. However, this seemingly straightforward decision spirals out of control as Dodo, initially sweet and supportive, transforms into a demanding diva once they embark on their faux matrimony. Caught up in the ensuing chaos are Henri’s devout father Édouard and his romantic interest, Élisabeth.
The Staged Reading Format
The staged reading, or
Lecture, draws inspiration from French theater terminology. It is not merely a sitting-and-reading performance but includes elements closer to full theatrical productions. Actors will interact and move about the stage, making it an engaging spectacle. Key features of this format include:
- - Incorporation of Movement: Unlike traditional readings, the performance encourages dynamic interactions and movement among actors, resembling a regular play.
- - Script Accessibility: The actors need not memorize their lines fully, allowing them to focus on conveying emotion and expression rather than worrying about remembering dialogues.
- - Rich Production Elements: The performance will utilize authentic lighting, sound effects, and costumes, offering audiences an immersive experience comparable to regular theatrical performances.
