Reviving Tradition: Rickshaw Rides Around Kabukiza Theatre
Tokyo’s iconic Kabukiza Theatre is set to enhance its cultural offerings with the relaunch of traditional rickshaw rides starting May 2, 2025, running through June 27, 2025. Organized by Rise Up Co., Ltd., in collaboration with the Higashi-Ginza Area Management Association and Asakusa Rokku Area Management Association, this initiative aims to recapture the nostalgic atmosphere of the past as influenced by the famous Kabuki performances.
A Nod to Cultural Heritage
This special event coincides with the name inheritance ceremony for the eighth generation of Onoue Kikugoro and the sixth generation of Onoue Kikunosuke. The rickshaw, once a vital transportation mode in the bustling streets of Ginza and Tsukiji, is making its grand return to commemorate this significant cultural moment. For generations, these rickshaws have been closely associated with Kabuki actors, geishas, and cultural figures, symbolizing the dynamic spirit of these neighborhoods following the Meiji period.
The revival of this age-old tradition will not only offer visitors a unique way to explore the area but will also bring alive the rich historical context behind each corner of East Ginza and Tsukiji. As guests enjoy a ride, they will be treated to stories and insights from the knowledgeable rickshaw pullers, who serve not merely as drivers but as cultural storytellers, enhancing the overall experience.
Themed Rickshaw Experience
Two uniquely designed rickshaws will be introduced for this event. One will feature special wrapping corresponding to the 'Dangu Festival of May Kabuki' in May and the 'June Grand Kabuki' in June. The routes will include significant historical sites, such as Tsukiji Hongan-ji and Tsukiji Market, ensuring an immersive cultural trip through the breathtaking sights and sounds of the area.
