NICHIMO and Partners Selected for Blue Carbon Initiative



NICHIMO Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, is proud to announce its selection for a large-scale Blue Carbon project by Japan's Ministry of Environment. Teaming up with RIKEN Food Co., Ltd. from Tagajo, Miyagi, and Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co., Ltd. from Minato, Tokyo, this collaborative effort aims at addressing climate change effectively through enhanced seaweed cultivation practices.

In recent years, addressing climate change has been at the forefront of global initiatives, prompting a push towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions. This ambitious goal requires not only reducing emissions through energy conservation and other measures but also enhancing carbon absorption strategies like Blue Carbon.

The joint project will utilize NICHIMO's innovative seaweed cultivation materials, RIKEN Food's seed production and cultivation techniques, and Sumitomo Osaka Cement's specialized materials. The objective is to establish the most effective methods for maximizing the productivity of seaweed cultivation. Notably, our bio-based and biodegradable seaweed cultivation materials have demonstrated initial growth rates 4 to 5 times higher than conventional petroleum-based options, promising significant advancements in cultivation efficiency.
