Okayama University Semiconductor Course Attracts Diverse Participants

On September 11 and 12, 2025, Okayama University hosted an open course titled "Introduction to Advanced Semiconductor Technology" at its Tsushima Campus. Over 100 individuals from various backgrounds, including students, working professionals, high schoolers, and even seniors aged up to 80, gathered to participate in this unique educational event.

This initiative is spearheaded by the Okayama Semiconductor Research and Education Promotion Committee, which aims to promote research and education related to semiconductors in the Okayama region. This year marks the second year for the intensive course aimed at first-year science and engineering students, continuing from the previous year. With support from numerous companies and organizations, leading experts were invited as guest lecturers to share their invaluable knowledge.

The curriculum covered a broad range of topics, including the basic operations of AI and smartphones, power electronics, semiconductor manufacturing processes, the strengths of Japan's semiconductor industry, and applications of optoelectronics. This year, students from 18 universities across the prefecture, such as Okayama Prefectural University and Okayama University of Science, participated through a credit-sharing system established by the Okayama University Consortium.

Moreover, the course also contributes to recurrent education for local businesses, drawing attention from the Chugoku Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, and is referenced by the Chugoku Regional Semiconductor Industry Promotion Council.

Feedback from participants provided insight into the value of the course. Many business professionals noted the effectiveness of the training for new employees, stating, “Learning in an environment where the instructors convey their passion is crucial.” They also expressed a desire to hear more about fabless companies and semiconductor-utilizing companies, highlighting the significance of collaborative learning that transcends educational institutions and industries, all focused on the central theme of semiconductors.

Students reflected on the relevance of semiconductors in their daily lives, with one comment highlighting, “I realized how semiconductors support our everyday activities.” Another remarked on the importance of exposure to cutting-edge technologies as a motivation for considering future career paths. Concerns were also raised about the increasing data communication volume and energy consumption due to the use of AI, emphasizing the necessity of interdisciplinary knowledge to address challenges that can't be solved by a single field of expertise. Additionally, insights into the importance of doctoral programs were mentioned, with many agreeing that the global stage is the true arena for future endeavors.

Okayama University is committed to strengthening education and research in the semiconductor field, continuing collaboration with local businesses, government agencies, and universities both domestically and internationally. The university strives to remain a core regional institution known for its unique research initiatives, and further endeavors in semiconductor education and research are eagerly anticipated.
