Experience an Early Autumn of Art at UNWIND GALLERY in Hokkaido!
As the season of art approaches, UNWIND HOTEL & BAR Otaru in Hokkaido invites guests to immerse themselves in an artistic experience. From September 1 to November 29, 2025, the hotel's gallery, UNWIND GALLERY, will host an exhibition titled "Fruit of the Landing" presented by the online art poster shop, Whodunit. This collaborative effort brings together contemporary art and the whimsical world of mystery in a unique hotel setting.
The Enchantment of UNWIND GALLERY
Located in the picturesque city of Otaru, UNWIND HOTEL & BAR boasts a heritage that dates back to 1931 when it was established as Hokkaido's first hotel exclusively for foreigners. The property has undergone significant renovations to merge its historical charm with modern sensibilities, creating a boutique hotel that attracts guests from around the world.
Aiming to connect local culture with international art scenes, UNWIND GALLERY was launched in November 2022 to showcase the works of artists associated with Hokkaido. The gallery serves as a vibrant space where modern art meets the delightful atmosphere of one of Hokkaido's notable historical buildings.
Elevating Art Through Taste: Art-Pairing Cocktails
As part of this unique initiative, guests have the opportunity to enjoy art through a variety of senses. Not only can they view the art on display, but they can also savor specially crafted "art-pairing cocktails" inspired by the exhibition. These limited-time cocktails will be available at the hotel’s bar, Bar Ignis Otaru, during the exhibition period, allowing guests to enjoy a multisensory experience that transcends traditional art appreciation.
Whodunit Exhibition: Diving Into the Mystery
The upcoming exhibit is the 13th project organized by UNWIND GALLERY, featuring 17 surrealist oil paintings reimagined as posters by Whodunit. The name "Whodunit" echoes the genre of mystery storytelling, making art a playful exploration of intrigue and visual narratives. Visitors will encounter an array of captivating works that celebrate the autumn harvest, with unique perspectives that blend elements of the locale with an uncanny twist.
The focus on fruit and vegetable motifs reflects the theme of seasonal abundance, while the added surrealistic flair will invite viewers to reimagine their surroundings in an engaging light. A selection of these artworks will also be available for purchase, allowing art lovers to take a piece of this imaginative world home with them.
A Free Admission Invitation
UNWIND GALLERY warmly welcomes everyone—whether guests staying at the hotel, local residents, or travelers passing through—to enjoy the art free of charge. The gallery will be open daily from 7 AM to midnight, encouraging all to explore the array of imaginative artworks on display.
Experiencing the Art-Pairing Cocktails
Bar Ignis Otaru adds another layer of enjoyment to the exhibition with its art-pairing cocktails. One particular cocktail, inspired by the displayed work titled "Mimic," will surely tantalize your palate. Featuring a blend of sweet and sour pomegranate with Hokkaido herbs and spices, complemented by a hint of brewed coffee, this cocktail serves as a perfect accompaniment to your artistic journey.
With hours of operation from 7:30 PM to 11:30 PM, visitors can indulge in these crafted drinks whether they're hotel guests or general visitors, ensuring that everyone has the chance to savor a piece of art-infused refreshment.
Whodunit: The Artist Behind the Mystery
Whodunit is not just a name; it's a concept rooted in artistic mystery. The shop aims to offer visually striking posters that elevate any space while deliberately hiding the identities of its artists. Drawing from themes of travel and exploration, the artist reflects on how moments during journeys can reveal underlying stories and connections between the mundane and the extraordinary.
