Sultan of Afar Urges Immediate Peace in Region Amid Ongoing Conflict
In a poignant appeal for peace, Ahmed Alimirah, the Sultan of Afar, has issued a statement demanding an end to the escalating conflict affecting the Afar region of Ethiopia. He has called upon both the United Nations and the African Union to assist in de-escalating tensions and facilitating crucial peace talks. The statement, titled "This is Not Our War," paints a harrowing picture of the suffering endured by the Afar, who are one of the most marginalized ethnic groups in Ethiopia.
The Sultan emphasized that the Afar people have historically been caught in the crossfire of conflicts they did not initiate, stating, "Afars have repeatedly paid the price for wars we did not start." With the latest conflict once again bringing devastation to their homeland, he lamented the catastrophic consequences, including the abandonment of homes, loss of livestock, and the taking of innocent lives. The statement highlighted that victims have included vulnerable populations such as women, children, and the elderly.
Events took a tragic turn last year, when a drone strike attributed to Djibouti killed eleven Afar civilians in Siyaru, a village close to the Ethiopia-Djibouti border. This attack, which targeted what was believed to be rebel forces, instead struck a civilian area, raising serious concerns regarding the safety and protection of non-combatants in the ongoing conflicts. Ahmed Alimirah was one of the few voices speaking out against this strike, condemning the disregard for civilian life.
Currently, the Afar homeland is strategically located along the vital corridor between Addis Ababa and Djibouti, through which over 95% of Ethiopia's trade by volume passes. This geographical significance has turned the region into a battleground, making the necessity for peace negotiations even more critical.
Sultan Alimirah intends to initiate discussions with representatives from the United Nations and the African Union to seek a peaceful resolution through constructive dialogue. He asserted, "The Afars have defended their homeland throughout history and sacrificed for Ethiopia long before today's governments, political parties, and armed movements existed." He reiterated that this conflict must be addressed through dialogue rather than violence, urging immediate attention to the situation.
In concluding his statement, the Sultan called for a united front in supporting the United Nations' and the African Union's initiatives for a peaceful resolution. He stated, "The path of peace through genuine dialogue and respect for Ethiopia's sovereignty must be pursued." The Sultan of Afar is calling on the international community to heed their plight and act to halt the endless cycle of violence that has plagued the Afar region.
This appeal not only highlights the humanitarian crisis faced by the Afar but also underscores the broader need for respect and protection for all marginalized communities embroiled in conflict. As the world watches, the words of the Sultan serve as a reminder of the urgent need for compassion and action to foster peace in Ethiopia's troubled regions.
