Exhibition Details
This exhibition showcases the remarkable work of photographer Toki Hiro Sato, who has dedicated his career to exploring the relationship between time and space through innovative photographic techniques. Through a unique blend of shooting, projection, and re-photographing, Sato has presented numerous works both domestically and internationally that visualize the layers of memory and time ingrained in specific locations.
Key highlights of the exhibition include the acclaimed
Magic Lantern series, which was originally featured in a solo exhibition at the Hachinohe City Museum of Art in 2022. This series delves into the interplay of light, time, and place. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to experience new works like
An Hour Exposure, which captures the transformations of Tokyo through long exposure photography, and
Phantom Images, which overlays daytime scenes as they are projected at night, effectively visualizing the fleeting overlaps of light and time. All displayed photographs are printed using Canon's imagePROGRAF PRO-4600 printers.
Artist's Message
Toki Hiro Sato notes, “After six years of preparation, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, I successfully launched my exhibition at the Hachinohe City Museum of Art in 2022. A pivotal element was the
Magic Lantern series, where I captured significant cultural events like the Sansha Taisai Festival and the traditional winter
Enburi festival over time, re-projecting those images back onto the landscapes of Hachinohe.” Sato emphasizes the magic lantern as a device that releases images outward, bringing past visuals into present spaces. The upcoming exhibition features new works that explore the ephemeral nature of light and time within everyday Tokyo landscapes through techniques like long-exposure photography and night projections.
