Sanosuke Rysuke's Exhibition 'ZOOOOOOOOOOOOM / FACE'
Art enthusiasts, mark your calendars! Starting August 9, 2025, the Gallery & Bakery Tokyo will host Sanosuke Rysuke's latest solo exhibition titled "ZOOOOOOOOOOOOM / FACE." Known for his dynamic fusion of abstraction and figuration, Rysuke will present new works, including an impressive piece that exceeds 7 meters in height.
Exhibition Details
Presented by The Chain Museum, the exhibition takes place in a unique space that combines an art gallery with a café and bakery, located in Kyobashi, Tokyo. Rysuke's journey as an artist began in 2016 when he was an assistant to local artists during his three-month stay in New York City. Since his first exhibition in 2018, he has continually created works that explore a concept he calls "ZOOM," which emphasizes non-linear figurative and abstract compositions.
The centerpiece of this exhibition is the "FACE series," where Rysuke delves into fragments of memory through the motif of the human face. Inspired by the publication "Gernika of the Dark Curtain," the highlight of the exhibition will showcase Rysuke's largest work to date. Visitors can expect a vibrant color palette that envelops the viewer and draws them into his world of artistic expression.
Rysuke reflects on the complexity of the human face, stating that it serves as both a straightforward motif and a profound challenge of representation. In his own words: “The face is a fragment of someone else’s and of myself, appearing and disappearing from the depths of memory.” Through this exhibition, he invites viewers to question what it means to truly confront another person, and oneself, within a world filled with division and conflict.
As the show progresses, Sanosuke's works aim to resonate with guests by instilling a sense of peace through collectively confronting our identities. He believes this mutual engagement will invoke the strength to resist violence borne from prejudice and misunderstanding.
A Journey Through Art and Emotion
At the core of Rysuke's creative process is the concept of “ZOOM,” which he describes as an active reconstruction of fragmented memories, emotions, and relationships from one's own perspective. What may initially look abstract gradually becomes more defined as one approaches it. This transformative view intends to challenge the spectator's understanding of reality, ultimately prompting them to reconsider what it means to observe art.
One of the highlights of the exhibition includes a tribute to Pablo Picasso, honoring his ability to create powerful narratives through painting without vocal aggression or command—the essence of existence depicted vibrantly on the canvas. Rysuke incorporates elements from his intimate world, painting his daughter and wife into the piece, encapsulating a sentiment of hope for the future and a quiet prayer.
Colors collide, shapes overlap, and a dance between order and chaos unfolds on the canvas, mirroring both Rysuke's inner self and the world we inhabit.
Rysuke expresses, "I have been resonating with a certain lyrics: ‘I want to be myself, just as a cat is a cat and a dog is a dog.’” This thought, he believes, speaks to a universal struggle for authenticity, particularly in places where ‘being oneself’ is a daunting prospect.
In conclusion, Sanosuke Rysuke's exhibition is an invitation to explore shared humanity through the lens of the face—an emblem of connection, conflict, and the complexity of existence. It is an opportunity to engage deeply with oneself and others, and as he hopes, a quiet prayer for life itself.
