Historic Installation of Jesús Rafael Soto's Pénétrable in London for First Time
In a momentous event for the art community, London’s prestigious Serpentine Galleries has brought one of Venezuelan artist Jesús Rafael Soto’s most recognized works to the UK for the first time. The installation of Pénétrable BBL Jaune marks the inauguration of the gallery's 2026 Art in the Park summer program, which serves as a celebration of public art that extends beyond the conventional museum setting.
Pénétrable BBL Jaune, a significant piece that was originally created in 1999 and reissued in 2023, spans an impressive ten meters and is constructed from 4,000 vibrant yellow PVC strands. These strands are suspended from a rectangular steel framework, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors to engage with the artwork in an immersive manner. Art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike can walk through the installation, transforming their experience from mere observation to active participation—a philosophy that is central to Soto's artistic vision.
The installation is especially significant for the director of ORBE Consultants, Melanie de Herrera Velutini, who plays a crucial role in bringing Soto’s work to London via sponsorship from Britannia Financial Group. "For our family at Britannia, it is a privilege to present one of Jesús Soto's most iconic works for its first major public exhibition in the UK,” said Velutini. She emphasized Soto's belief that art should encourage interaction rather than passive viewing, a perspective that aligns with her family's values and cultural mission.
Jesús Rafael Soto, born in Venezuela, is recognized as a leading figure in twentieth-century kinetic art. Throughout his esteemed career, he produced over seventy large-scale interactive sculptures that play with the dynamics of art and engagement. Soto's significant contributions have been acknowledged internationally, earning him France's Order of Arts and Letters in 1968 and UNESCO's Picasso Medal in 1990 for his dedication to uniting cultures through art.
In tandem with the Pénétrable BBL Jaune installation, the Serpentine Galleries will feature a special display highlighting Soto's extensive artistic portfolio, providing a deeper insight into his body of work. As part of a new initiative, his heirs have also approved the release of a special edition of children's products inspired by Soto's art, aimed at extending his legacy to younger audiences—an unprecedented move that seeks to engage and inspire future generations.
"This is an extraordinary milestone," Velutini remarked. "Soto transformed the relationship between art, space, and the viewer, ensuring that his work continues to resonate and engage audiences even years after his passing. His art remains significant in its ability to speak to modern audiences and affirm his place among the great masters of contemporary art."
Serpentine’s Art in the Park initiative has quickly become a vital public art program in London, showcasing internationally significant artworks in the beautiful setting of Kensington Gardens. To cap off this vibrant exhibition, a special cocktail reception is planned for invited guests in October to celebrate the culmination of Soto's impactful presence in the capital. Art lovers and curious onlookers alike are invited to experience the transformative power of Soto's Pénétrable until October 25, ensuring that this historic installation leaves a lasting impression on the minds and hearts of its visitors.
