Jesús Rafael Soto's Iconic Kinetic Art Debuts in London for the First Time

An Iconic Kinetic Art Installation Graces London

In a historic moment for art enthusiasts, London's Serpentine Galleries has introduced the renowned installation "Pénétrable BBL Jaune" by the celebrated Venezuelan kinetic artist, Jesús Rafael Soto. This installation will be on display as part of the gallery's Art in the Park initiative, which runs from July 10 until October 25, 2026. This marks the first outdoor public exhibition of Soto’s work in the UK, allowing the city’s residents and tourists alike to engage with art in an interactive environment.

The Pénétrable BBL Jaune spans an impressive ten meters and is crafted from 4,000 identical vinyl threads suspended from a steel frame. Originally created in 1999 and re-launched in 2023 to honor Soto’s 100th birthday, this installation exemplifies Soto’s vision of art that invites not just observation but participation. The piece encourages visitors to walk through and interact with the installation, blurring the lines between art and viewer, which is a principle Soto upheld throughout his illustrious career.

Soto, recognized as one of the most influential figures in 20th-century kinetic art, received the prestigious Order of Arts and Letters from the French government in 1968 and the UNESCO Picasso Medal in 1990, acknowledging his significant contributions to the global art community.

The Vision Behind Art in the Park

The exhibition is supported by the Britannia Financial Group, with Melanie Herrera de Velutini, who heads the artistic strategy at Britannia, expressing pride in being part of such a milestone event. "It’s an honor for Britannia Financial Group and our family to support the first solo exhibition of Jesús Soto's work in London and to inspire future generations from one of the world's most important cultural spaces," she stated.

This launch of the Art in the Park initiative by the Serpentine not only embodies a celebration of Soto’s legacy but also aims to democratize access to art beyond traditional gallery walls. In tandem with Soto's installation, the gallery showcases a special exhibition dedicated to his imaginative artistic portfolio. Furthermore, for the first time, Soto’s heirs have authorized a special edition of children’s products that draw inspiration from his artwork, expanding the reach of his artistic vision to younger audiences.

Engaging All Generations

Melanie Herrera encapsulated Soto’s transformative impact by noting, "His vision has always transformed the relationship between art, space, and the spectator. This new way of appreciating his work reaffirms the enduring relevance of this universal artist, whose creations continue to resonate with the public more than two decades after his passing."

The Art in the Park program is not just focused on individual installations; it seeks to offer contemporary art, architecture, and public activities, creating a vibrant cultural atmosphere in one of London’s key artistic districts. The event will conclude with a cocktail finissage in October, where special guests will gather to celebrate Soto's legacy amidst the gardens of the Serpentine.

As visitors stroll through the Pénétrable, they are not merely observing a work of art but participating in an interactive experience that encapsulates the essence of Soto's vision. This exhibition is not only a tribute to an artist who shaped kinetic art but also an invitation for today’s audience to immerse themselves in the dialogue between art and viewer, therefore continuing the legacy of Jesús Rafael Soto well into the future.
