Exploring the Wonders of Akita's Rice Planting and Wild Vegetable Gathering Experience

Discover Akita: A Taste of Tradition

Immerse yourself in an unforgettable experience in the lush greenery of Akita, where the gentle whispers of nature beckon you to explore its rich agricultural heritage. Palsystem Tokyo and Palsystem Chiba are hosting a unique two-day tour from May 24 to 25, 2025, in the vibrant agricultural heartland of Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture. This tour promises a hands-on experience like no other, allowing participants to engage directly with local farmers through rice planting and wild vegetable gathering.

A Day of Learning and Connection

The journey begins early on Saturday, as participants travel by Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Omagari Station in Daisen City, followed by an hour's bus ride to the fields of JA Komachi. Upon arrival, an enthusiastic group of around 40 participants will be warmly welcomed by dedicated producers eager to share their knowledge and expertise in rice cultivation. Clad in comfortable attire, participants will step into the muddy fields to learn the art of rice planting, planting the carefully nurtured seedlings of the specially cultivated rice, 'Eco-Akita Akitakomachi'.

Participants will also have the opportunity to operate a rice planting machine, allowing them to experience modern agricultural techniques firsthand. This interactive element not only educates but fosters a deeper appreciation for the hard work that goes into food production.

Culinary Delights Await

After a day of labor and learning, participants will unwind at a traditional ryokan in Koyasuyachi Onsen, where they will savor local specialties prepared with seasonal ingredients by the inn's owner. The homemade dishes, featuring local mountain vegetables and river fish, create an opportunity for rich storytelling as participants interact with farmers, who share insights into their current agricultural practices, and the story behind the food that graces their tables. With local sake flowing, this communal meal uniquely marries flavors and conversations in a warm atmosphere of gratitude and connection.

Delving into Apple Farming

On the second day, participants will visit the Onohara Masahiro, the representative of the Ougachi Apple Production Society. Here, attendees can explore the picturesque apple orchards nurturing 'Fuji' apples, all while foraging for wild vegetables such as warabi. This hands-on session will include a lesson on preparing these wild ingredients, showcasing the local culinary practice. During lunchtime, Akita South Area Women's Group will join the gathering, adding warmth to the event with locally-revered food and freshly made rice balls.

As the tour draws to an end, the bittersweet farewells with newly made friends, both local and among fellow participants, will resonate with a deeper understanding of agricultural life. A stop at the Ougachi Roadside Station allows for a final shopping opportunity for regional products before heading back to Tokyo.

A Commitment to Sustainable Agriculture

The collaboration between Palsystem and Akita's agricultural producers is made possible through the Akita Southern Region Exchange Council, which was established in 2002. The council solely focuses on strengthening ties between producers and consumers, enhancing the exchange of safe, reliable agricultural products. In 2006, initiatives led by Palsystem Tokyo, Palsystem Chiba, and the Palsystem Federation, aimed to boost local exchange and foster eco-friendly practices while enriching the marketplace with innovative products.

Year after year, this alliance provides experiences from rice planting to harvesting, allowing countless participants to visit the regions and profoundly connect with the source of their food. Cooking classes where locals teach participants how to prepare Akita's signature dish, Kiritanpo, exemplify the ways in which Palsystem seeks to enrich the bond between farm and table.

As we approach the International Year of Cooperatives in 2025, Palsystem is poised to deepen its commitment to cooperative efforts, aspiring towards a sustainable future for both agricultural production and consumption.
