The Launch of Wakayama Gobō Biomass Power Plant Marks a New Era

The Wakayama Gobō Biomass Power Plant, a joint venture between Osaka Gas Co., Enewill Co., and SMFL Mirai Partners Co., has started its commercial operations. This marks the finalization of a significant milestone for the Daigas Group as all eight biomass power plants they are involved in are now operational, resulting in a total generation capacity of about 450,000 kW, positioning Daigas as one of Japan's leading renewable energy players.

Located in Higashiko Industrial Area in Gobō City, Wakayama Prefecture, the new power plant boasts a capacity of 50,000 kW. The facility utilizes wooden pellets and Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) as its primary fuels, operating on a site that covers approximately 70,000 m². This plant is pivotal not only for meeting energy demands but also for advancing Japan's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050.

The addition of the Wakayama Gobō facility contributes greatly to the Daigas Group’s goal of expanding renewable energy capacity to 5 million kW by 2030. Currently, the group's total contribution stands at 3.76 million kW. The strategic development of biomass energy, which allows for stable power generation unaffected by weather or time variables, is a key component of this initiative.

Daigas Group has leveraged knowledge and expertise gained from its previous biomass operations to ensure the stable operation of this plant. With the onset of operations slightly ahead of schedule—instead of the initially planned September 2025 launch—the company demonstrates agility and commitment to pushing the envelope in renewable energy deployment.

Biomass energy stands out among renewable sources as it offers a reliable electrical supply, proving essential for energy security. The Daigas Group continues to focus on enhancing innovation in this field and maintaining operational stability across its power plants. Future plans include further recruitment of renewable energy startups, fostering partnerships, and enhancing technology deployments in biomass energy.

As part of the Daigas Group’s broader efforts, the company actively promotes environmentally friendly practices and sustainable energy developments, paving a way towards a low-carbon society. With the establishment of the Wakayama Gobō Biomass Power Plant, the group additionally emphasizes its role in executing concrete steps towards meeting Japan’s environmental goals.
