Culture in Motion™ Brings Community Empowerment to Southern California Through the Apollo's Legacy

Culture in Motion™: A Celebration of Art and Community in Southern California

Culture in Motion™, a dynamic national tour celebrating arts and empowerment, has officially launched in Southern California this January, coinciding with Grammy Week. This initiative, a collaboration between the iconic Apollo Theater and creative force Kwanza Jones, seeks to infuse the community with rich cultural programming inspired by The Apollo's legacy and Jones' SUPERCHARGED® energy.

Empowering Communities Through Art

The concept behind Culture in Motion™ is revolutionary—transforming local spaces into hubs for cultural exchange, creative expression, and empowerment. This initiative highlights Southern California's stature as a global creative ecosystem by inviting artists and creators to contribute their talents and time towards community engagement.

As the tour traverses various neighborhoods, it emphasizes the diverse narratives and creative energy that define Los Angeles and its surrounding cities. Each activation will be anchored in four cornerstone principles: accessibility to the arts, community engagement, empowerment, and legacy, while resonating with the unique spirit of each neighborhood.

Robert Sausedo, President and CEO of Community Build, Inc., remarked, "Culture in Motion is the ultimate expression of Kwanza Jones' SUPERCHARGED movement—elevating culture, expanding human potential, and enhancing humanity through investments that honor and uphold the heritage of artistic institutions like The Apollo and Los Angeles communities." This initiative is targeted to nurture civic values shared among participants, ultimately strengthening the creative economy as it grows.

Celebrating Cultural Convergence

Launched during Grammy Week, this initiative aligns with a broader cultural moment where artists, creators, and cultural leaders converge throughout Southern California. The tour harnesses this collective energy into nonprofit neighborhood-centered programming designed to extend cultural experiences beyond traditional venues and stages.

Kwanza Jones, the visionary artist and member of The Apollo's board, stated, "Culture does not stand still, and neither do we. Culture in Motion is a living expression of art, empowerment, and community. Launching in Los Angeles expands the spirit of The Apollo beyond its walls and into the streets where creators and communities advance culture together. This project sets the tone for a tour that invites people to show up, participate, and see themselves in what is possible."

Prior to making its debut in Southern California, the tour was ceremonially dispatched from Harlem, aligning with The Apollo's 92nd anniversary. This milestone reflects the institution’s evolution from a physical space to a vibrant cultural experience.

Continuing a Legacy

Michelle Ebanks, President and CEO of The Apollo, commented on the significance of this tour: "For more than 90 years, The Apollo has been a meeting place where culture, community, and possibilities converge, advocating community involvement, nurturing generations of artists, and acting as a catalyst for social and civic advocacy. With Culture in Motion, we are expanding that legacy to new communities, beginning in Southern California and forging new paths for engagement, creativity, and connection as we approach the next century."

Culture in Motion is made possible through generous support from the Kwanza Jones & José E. Feliciano Initiative. For more information on public programming and community participation opportunities in Southern California, visit boostbus.com #CultureInMotion.
