Experience the Enchantment of Illumination at The Morton Arboretum This Winter

The Return of Illumination at The Morton Arboretum

As the frost settles over Chicago, The Morton Arboretum prepares to welcome visitors into a world of light and wonder. From November 14 to January 2, the 14th season of Illumination beckons both returning and new guests to explore its innovative displays. With tickets going on sale to the general public on October 15, excitement is palpable for this year’s extraordinary visual feast.

A Dazzling Array of 22 Displays

This year, the Illumination exhibition promises an enchanting experience with 22 captivating displays, including four new large-scale installations. One of the highlights is the Northern Lights, a breathtaking 400-foot long canopy resembling the aurora borealis, which promises to dazzle onlookers. This monumental display is complemented by other enchanting sections like Lightwave, a tunnel of moving spheres that mimic raindrops, and Cosmic Garden, with its serene glowing orbs reminiscent of meditative sand patterns.

For families and children, the newly introduced Pine Whistle Railroad adds a playful dimension to the event. Set in the Firefly Pavilion, this fantastic model train exhibit features nearly 1,000 feet of track winding through delightful illuminated landscapes filled with miniatures of fairy houses and giant mushrooms. Guests can immerse themselves in the fantasy world as trains pass overhead and at eye level, promoting a magical environment for all. This interactive exhibit will be available during both daytime openings and evening Illumination hours.

A Return to Favorite Displays and New Enhancements

While Illumination expands with new features, returning favorites like Treemagination and Symphony Woods will be enhanced for extra magic. Interactive displays are set to return, featuring beloved installations such as Hug-a-Tree, ensuring everyone finds something that delights their senses.

Accompanying guests on their journey are larger-than-life illuminated sculptures known as Vivid Creatures, created by artists Heather BeGaetz and Fez BeGaetz, adding whimsical elements to this year’s exhibition.

Special Events and Unique Experiences

Kicking off the festivities is IllumiBrew, a beer-tasting event for adults on November 13. Attendees can sample seasonal beverages from renowned local breweries while enjoying the enchanting decorations as twilight descends upon the Arboretum. This exclusive event is perfect for those seeking a festive outing with a twist.

Additionally, Dog Admission Nights on select evenings welcome furry friends to experience the magic together. Sensory-friendly sessions will also occur, designed for those requiring a more comfortable atmosphere with modified lights and sound features.

Cozy Additions to the Experience

To enhance the visit, guests can reserve cozy IllumiDomes, perfect for group gatherings. These 13-foot transparent structures come complete with warm beverages and s'more kits. All dome rentals can be paired with a specially curated four-course dining menu to enjoy while surrounded by illuminated beauty.
