Celebrating Hachiko: An Origami Art Exhibition in Shibuya
In April 2026, Shibuya will be hosting a remarkable origami art exhibition titled "WE LOVE HACHI 2026" at the Shibuya Scramble Square, specifically on the 12th floor. The event, organized by the creative group
Apriori.Art, is scheduled for the 4th and 5th of the month. This exhibition not only showcases the exceptional artistry of origami but also emphasizes the enduring legacy of Hachiko, the loyal Akita dog from Akita Prefecture.
A New Kind of Art
Apriori.Art aims to redefine origami as a form of modern art, moving beyond its traditional perception as mere childhood play. For this exhibition, children from both the Akita and Shibuya areas will participate by folding origami cranes, which will be intricately combined into a life-sized, illuminated wireframe sculpture of Hachiko. This interactive artwork will serve as a bridge between the communities of Akita and Shibuya, linking their shared love for the beloved Hachiko.
The event promises to be a family-friendly environment where visitors of all ages can engage in this unique art form. Each crane folded will contribute to a collective symbol of hope and peace, highlighting the continuous appreciation of Hachiko's loyalty and the stories that emerge from both locations.
An Artistic Interpretation of Hachiko
In addition to allowing visitors to create their own origami cranes, the exhibition will showcase reinterpretations of Hachiko by artists affiliated with 100BANCH, a project that supports innovative creators in Shibuya. These pieces will represent various artistic approaches to Hachiko's legacy, creating a dynamic dialogue surrounding this iconic figure.
Participants can join workshops on both days, where they can learn about the art of origami and contribute to the installation. With the use of LED lighting and traditional papers supplied by
SHOGADO, the exhibit merges contemporary techniques with classic artisanal methods, embodying a fusion of tradition and innovation.
A Legacy of Remembrance
The completed art installation will be presented during the
91st Hachiko Memorial Service on April 8, serving as a poignant tribute to the memory of Hachiko. The figures and installations present will pay homage to the hundreds of wishes and hopes that people have shared with Hachiko over the years, transforming them into a visual and experiential memory for all who visit.
This project not only focuses on remembering Hachiko but also seeks to cement his status as a symbol of loyalty and faith. It addresses historical values while intertwining current artistic expressions, thus offering a forward-looking perspective on Hachiko's impact on communities around the globe.
Inspired by Community Love
A key aspect of this exhibition is its ability to connect the two locales — Akita and Shibuya. Historically rich, Akita is Hachiko’s birthplace, revered for its Akita dogs, while Shibuya is the location where Hachiko awaited his owner, symbolizing unwavering loyalty. The event invites participants to reflect on the collective memories and aspirations associated with Hachiko, employing origami as the medium to express these sentiments.
As people from different backgrounds come together, they will be encouraged to ponder what Hachiko means to them, how his legacy continues in today’s society, and how art can push the boundaries of perception. Through origami cranes, attendees will show their love and respect, thereby creating a lasting foundation for future generations.
