American Lung Association Launches Campaign for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Awareness

American Lung Association's New Initiative

On November 4, 2026, the American Lung Association (ALA) initiated a nationwide campaign to raise awareness for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) as part of Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month. This unusual lung disease is not only rare but also frequently underdiagnosed, with an estimated 500 to 1,000 new cases occurring each year in the United States.

PAH falls under the broader category of pulmonary hypertension (PH), characterized by elevated blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. This condition causes the small arteries in the lungs to thicken and narrow, hindering blood flow and leading to serious health concerns. Although it predominantly affects women aged 30 to 60, PAH can affect individuals of all ages and genders, including children.

Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of ALA, emphasized the crucial need for increased awareness around PAH. He stated, "Our campaign was shaped by understanding current conversations happening within the PAH community. We realized that many patients endure lengthy journeys filled with frustration before receiving a diagnosis. It highlights the urgent need for healthcare providers to recognize symptoms of PAH sooner."

The campaign features personal stories from individuals like Jenna, who recounts her struggles from being unable to climb stairs to navigating a difficult diagnosis process before ultimately seeking help from a specialist. Another participant, Jen, shares her experience with a misdiagnosis of asthma that led to distressing symptoms. She highlights the importance of community support for individuals living with PAH, affirming, "The PAH community has transformed what used to feel isolating into a source of strength. It reassures us that we are never alone on this journey."

While there is currently no cure for PAH, several treatments are available to manage symptoms and enhance quality of life. The goal of treatment is to enable patients to lead normal, active lives. Specialists can develop a tailored treatment plan that may include medications, pulmonary rehabilitation, and supportive care. Adjustments in lifestyle, such as dietary changes, regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco, can also alleviate symptoms.

To support those affected by PAH, the American Lung Association, with assistance from Merck, has developed essential resources. Key components include:

1. PH Basics: A complimentary online class designed to help individuals comprehend PAH, recognize alarming symptoms, explore treatment options, and the significance of having a personalized treatment plan.
2. Lung Helpline: A toll-free helpline connecting people to experts who can provide insights into treatment options, resources for financial assistance, and general inquiries.
3. Educational Resources: Reliable and evidence-based information regarding PAH diagnosis, treatment methods, and strategies for managing life with the condition.
