Cognixion Launches Clinical Study for Groundbreaking BCI Device for ALS Patients
Cognixion Corporation has officially opened enrollment for an exciting new clinical study aimed at revolutionizing communication for individuals living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The study, known as the CHOICE study, investigates the efficacy of a cutting-edge wearable brain-computer interface (BCI) device designed to restore communication abilities for ALS patients.
Conducted with the backing of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the National Institutes of Health, the CHOICE study stands out as a first-of-its-kind longitudinal research initiative. This research pits Cognixion’s investigational BCI against popular eye-tracking communication devices commonly utilized by ALS patients.
Significance of the CHOICE Study
As ALS progresses, many individuals lose their ability to talk and increasingly depend on eye-tracking systems to manage their communication needs. Cognixion’s BCI attempts to change that; it incorporates an impressive array of technologies, merging artificial intelligence (AI) context awareness with augmented reality (AR) display glasses and a non-invasive wearable interface that monitors brain signals. Unlike traditional methods reliant solely on eye movement, this system allows for a broader range of interaction and autonomy, potentially changing how patients connect with the world around them.
Chris Ullrich, Chief Technology Officer and Principal Investigator of the CHOICE Study, emphasizes that Cognixion’s mission is to help restore dignity and agency to individuals facing communication barriers due to ALS. He stated, "The convergence of context awareness, AI mediation, and neural biosensing will unlock valuable capabilities for millions. For those affected by ALS, this technology could mean the difference between isolation and meaningful interaction with loved ones and caregivers."
Study Structure and Participation
The CHOICE study is set to enroll 30 adults over 18 years of age diagnosed with ALS across the United States. Participants will interact with three communication systems during the 12-week study: their current eye-tracking speech generating device, a head-worn version of Cognixion’s BCI with AR glasses, and a touchscreen-based platform. By allowing participants to select their preferred device and control how much time they engage with each option, the study will gather essential data on user experience, accuracy, and overall satisfaction.
Caregivers will be involved during the sessions to aid the participants as needed, and Cognixion's dedicated team will offer training and support throughout the study’s duration. Important metrics for evaluation will include communication speed, usability, quality of life, and the burden on caregivers, all crucial in understanding the full impact of this technology.
Who Can Join?
To be eligible for this innovative study, individuals must have significantly impaired speech due to ALS and need to be using, or in the process of evaluating, a Tobii Dynavox or Smartbox eye-tracking device for at least 30 days. Moreover, they must have a caregiver available to assist during the study. Participation is completely free, ensuring that no financial burdens are placed on those already facing the challenges of ALS.
