Discover the 'Waves of Body' Exhibition at Decameron
In the vibrant heart of Kabukicho, Shinjuku, an intriguing exhibition titled
'Waves of Body - Sex and Culture of Islands' will take place at the art space Decameron starting August 15, 2025. This unique exhibition aims to explore the diverse expressions of sexuality and cultural identity shaped by the historical contexts of Japan and Hawaii.
At Decameron, visitors will have the unique opportunity to engage with authentic
shunga, or traditional Japanese erotic art, highlighting pieces from renowned artist
Keisai Eisen. This exhibition is designed to allow viewers to experience the ambiance and atmosphere of the Edo period—understanding how people of that time interacted with the shunga's suggestive imagery.
Moreover, a compelling video interview featuring artist
Koa, who hails from a Native Hawaiian background and grew up speaking Hawaiian, will also be showcased. The interview invites viewers to reflect on the cultural narratives around sexuality and identity within Hawaiian culture, including expressions through
hula and
mele ma’i (poetry praising genitalia), while highlighting their historical evolution and ongoing importance in the contemporary landscape.
The Multifaceted Nature of Sexual Expression
Sexual expression is often viewed through a singular lens, yet the exhibition aims to unravel its complexity from historical and cultural perspectives. Shunga, often referred to as 'laughing books,' encapsulates a joyful and celebratory representation of eroticism, allowing one to sense the creative aspects tied to desire and the hope for progeny. However, it is crucial to recognize that these rich expressions emerged amidst a backdrop of exploitative institutions, such as
yūkaku (licensed red-light districts) and systems of human trafficking, along with male-dominated power structures. Reevaluating these historical expressions with caution is essential, as is questioning who defines what is considered 'savage' or 'obscene'—a conversation that remains relevant today.
In contrast, Hawaiian cultural expressions of sexuality have historically honored the bliss of life and sex, nurtured by a distinct cultural framework. However, with the onset of colonial rule in the 19th century, issues of sexual exploitation surged, and traditional expressions became constrained by foreign norms and values.
This exhibition juxtaposes these two diverse historical narratives, enabling visitors to grapple with the 'modern' perspectives ingrained within us subliminally. It prompts a reevaluation of sexuality and identity and the layered societal implications surrounding them.
Explore Further in the Shunga Universe
To deepen the experience of sexual expression through art, we recommend exploring the
Shinjuku Kabukicho Shunga Exhibit: Crafting Moments of 'Wa' currently running until September 30, 2025. This event, housed in the Shinjuku Kabukicho Noh Theatre, offers a broader range of shunga artworks that complement the
'Waves of Body' exhibition.
Together, these events present an extraordinary opportunity for attendees to indulge in the rich textures and dimensions of sexual expression reflected in art.
