Property searching can be a daunting task for anyone, but for LGBTQ individuals, the experience can be fraught with additional challenges and complexities. A recent joint survey conducted by MEMOCO and Zero Renovate aimed to uncover the realities faced by LGBTQ individuals when searching for suitable housing options. About the Survey

The survey titled "Lifestyle Realities Faced by LGBTQ Individuals" was conducted from March 17 to April 14, 2025. It utilized an online methodology as part of a crowdsourcing initiative and included a diverse demographic of respondents: 46 men, 73 women, and 6 individuals who opted not to disclose their gender. The participants' ages were varied, with the largest groups in their 20s (29%) and 30s (34%).

The LGBTQ Property Search Experience

The key focus of the survey was to understand the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals in the property search process. Surprisingly, only about 15% reported that they talked about their identity with the agents, while a significant 72% chose not to disclose this information. Around 1% of respondents noted that failing to disclose their identity had led to conflicts or complications during the rental process, demonstrating a clear reluctance—or fear—of potential bias from landlords or agents.

Experiences of Being Rejected

The survey also asked participants about any negative experiences when trying to rent properties with a partner. About 19% reported having been explicitly denied accommodation due to their sexual orientation, while 81% experienced no issues. Those who faced rejection shared troubling anecdotes:
