Dairy Workers at Kemps in Le Mars Vote to Join Teamsters Union, Enhancing Labor Representation

Kemps Workers Unite with Teamsters in Le Mars

In a significant move for labor rights, approximately 200 employees at Kemps, a subsidiary of Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), have overwhelmingly voted to affiliate with Teamsters Local 554. This event marks an important milestone as these production workers, warehouse personnel, and drivers now seek improved working conditions and benefits through collective bargaining.

The vote results were celebrated by union leaders who emphasized that this decision would empower these workers in a way they had not experienced before. Danny Avelyn, Teamsters Central Region International Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer of Local 554, expressed his enthusiasm about the development. He stated, "The Teamsters are the only union that can get these hardworking men and women the best contract possible at DFA, and we're honored that they chose to join our movement. We look forward to fighting alongside them."

By joining Teamsters Local 554, the new members of Kemps will not only focus on securing their first local union agreement but also become part of a larger, first-ever coordinated national contract campaign within the DFA co-operative. This represents the largest dairy cooperative in North America, and having union representation can significantly enhance the bargaining power of the workers.

Lou Villalvazo, Chairman of the DFA National Negotiating Committee, highlighted the importance of the new members’ energy and commitment. He noted, "Our newest members at Kemps will be critical to securing industry-leading agreements. The energy and dedication that these workers have will be critical to building momentum as we break new ground at DFA."

The course towards unionization was driven by a significant aspiration among Kemps employees to attain better wages, enhanced healthcare options, and improved workplace safety standards. Joseph Morris, a member of the Kemps Teamsters Organizing Committee, remarked, "All the hard work to win our election paid off. Everyone at this plant is looking forward to jumping right into bargaining so we can get the wages, health care, and safety that we deserve."

Teamsters Local 554 has a long history of representing workers in Nebraska and Eastern Iowa since 1937, advocating for labor rights and better working conditions for thousands in these regions. The decision to unite with Teamsters comes at a time when union representation is more important than ever, as many workers across various sectors seek to voice their concerns and gain fair treatment in the workplace.

This recent unionization highlights the growing trend of workers advocating for their rights and joining forces to negotiate better terms with employers. It reflects a broader movement within the labor sector where collective action becomes a powerful tool for change.

As Kemps workers embark on this new journey with Teamsters Local 554, their efforts could pave the way for other workers considering union representation to feel empowered.
