Reworld-SEMASS Sanitation Workers Unite with Teamsters
In a significant move for labor rights, sanitation workers at Reworld-SEMASS have overwhelmingly voted to join Teamsters Local 59. Approximately 120 auxiliary operators, equipment operators, loader operators, and rail tippers have taken this step to secure a robust contract that promises higher pay and improved benefits for their hard work and dedication.
Nick MacDonald, an auxiliary operator and proud new member of Local 59, expressed the motivation behind this unifying decision:
“I voted to join the Teamsters because I want Reworld to be a place where all workers feel they are supported. A workplace that prioritizes safety above all else, invests in universal training, and guarantees competitive and fair wages across the board.”
This move is particularly significant considering the historical pride that workers felt while being affiliated with Reworld-SEMASS. MacDonald added, “People used to be proud to say they work at Reworld-SEMASS. With the Teamsters supporting us, we're going to get back to having that pride at our workplace again.”
Operationally, the workers at the SEMASS Resource Recovery Facility in West Wareham play a crucial role in serving nearly 40 communities across Cape Cod, Massachusetts. They are responsible for keeping over one million tons of waste out of landfills each year, which is no small feat. The sanitation work is not only vital for maintaining public health but also improving the overall environment of these Massachusetts communities.
George Belanger, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 59, commented on the vital role that workers play in this demanding industry:
“The solid waste industry is difficult and dangerous. Reworld workers deserve strong union representation, and Local 59 is excited to provide that to them. We proudly welcome these 120 workers into our ranks and look forward to working with them to achieve the contract they have earned.”
This decision to unionize reflects a growing trend among workers in various sectors seeking to improve their working conditions and ensure fair treatment. Teamsters Local 59 represents a diverse range of employees across multiple industries in Massachusetts, advocating for labor rights and better working conditions for all.
The workers of Reworld-SEMASS now stand poised to negotiate a stronger contract that not only upholds their rights but also enhances their working life and future job security.
