METLEN and PETRONAS Forge LNG Supply Agreement to Enhance Energy Security in Southeast Europe

METLEN and PETRONAS: A Strategic LNG Supply Partnership

In a significant advancement for energy collaboration, METLEN has forged a pivotal Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with PETRONAS, specifically through its subsidiary, PETCO Trading (UK) Limited (PTUK). This agreement, signed on September 14, 2026, establishes a long-term supply chain for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) into Greece starting in 2027.

Under the terms of the agreement, PETUK will commit to delivering six LNG cargoes annually from its extensive Atlantic portfolio. This translates to an impressive capacity of approximately 0.6 billion cubic meters per annum (bcma) over five years, making it a significant boost to Greece’s energy landscape.

The significance of this partnership is underscored by METLEN’s ongoing strategy to enhance its Energy Sector Utility efforts through diversified LNG sourcing. The collaboration not only aims to fortify supply security for Greece but also establishes the nation as a strategic hub in the Southeast European energy market. The deal exemplifies METLEN's ambition to enhance flexibility and resilience in its procurement processes which is essential given the evolving global energy landscape.

As an international industrial and energy enterprise, METLEN is committed to supporting market liquidity and efficient energy supplies across Europe. This agreement aligns with their broader goal to contribute substantially to the region's energy needs and security patterns. METLEN has actively positioned itself as a leader in sustainable growth within the metals and energy sectors, emphasizing its contributions in clean energy solutions and energy trading mechanisms.

From PETRONAS's perspective, the SPA signifies their ongoing commitment to delivering reliable LNG solutions that meet the dynamic needs of their customers. The company is recognized for its strategic leverage within the global LNG market, particularly as it expands its reach in key areas across Europe and the Mediterranean. PTUK's involvement highlights PETRONAS's focus on enhancing customer relationships and serving the growth market efficiently.

Both organizations see this strategic alliance as a foundation for future collaborations, enhancing their ability to meet rapidly changing energy demands while solidifying their partnerships. METLEN’s Chief Executive Director for International Energy Supply Trading, Panayotis Kanellopoulos, emphasized the importance of this agreement in diversifying LNG sourcing and enhancing reliability, providing substantial support to both their customers and the regional market.

PETRONAS’s Executive Vice President and CEO of Gas & Maritime Business, Datuk Adif Zulkifli, also expressed confidence in the partnership. He noted that this agreement underscores PETRONAS’s objective of delivering not only reliable but also flexible LNG solutions, which are vital as global energy challenges intensify amidst changing regulatory frameworks and increasing energy transition priorities.

A mutual commitment from METLEN and PETRONAS aims to foster a more diversified LNG supply and bolster energy resilience, thereby addressing the evolving needs of Greece and the greater Southeast European region. This collaboration not only brings immediate supply chain benefits but is also seen as a significant step toward securing long-term energy stability for the area.

As both companies reinforce their foothold in the energy market, the partnership’s ripple effects are expected to resonate throughout the industry, influencing energy procurement strategies and regional cooperation in energy security. This will pave the way for not only enhanced economic opportunities but also a reliable energy future for Southeast Europe.
