Comprehensive Medical Group's Initiative
The Sogo Medical Group, based in Tokyo and Fukuoka, is launching a comprehensive program aimed at supporting cancer patients' quality of life (QOL) and their reintegration into society. This initiative focuses on providing "appearance care," which addresses changes in a patient's appearance due to cancer treatment, through specialized pharmacies linked to medical institutions. This structured support is critical in creating a society that allows for coexistence with cancer, as emphasized by the government.
Importance of Appearance Care
The number of new cancer patients in Japan has remained high, with around one million diagnosed annually. The five-year relative survival rate has reached approximately 65%. As more cancer patients maintain a lifestyle that accommodates treatment, the need for support in balancing medical care with daily living has become increasingly apparent. Significant issues arise from changes in appearance, such as hair loss, skin discoloration, and nail disorders, which can severely impact a patient's day-to-day life, employment prospects, and social engagement. Studies indicate that 58.1% of patients report experiencing appearance changes due to cancer treatment, with over 40% stating that these changes have led them to withdraw from social interactions and even discontinue work or studies.
Bridging Information Gaps in Healthcare
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has identified the establishment of a robust framework for appearance care as a key strategy in its fourth basic plan for cancer control. However, data suggests a significant gap in reliable information regarding appearance care, with about 40% of information assessed by healthcare professionals being deemed inaccurate. Many patients with concerns about their appearance do not seek help, highlighting a need for targeted interventions by professionals equipped with expertise in oncology.
Future Prospects
The core of the government-promoted concept of coexistence with cancer is ensuring that patients can thrive within their local communities. However, the psychological barriers posed by shifting appearances and informational voids create significant hurdles for their reintegration into society. To combat these challenges, the Sogo Medical Group is focusing on creating a "third place" between hospital and home, serving as a supportive environment for those experiencing transitional emotions.
The initiative will commence with four pharmacies—Sogo Pharmacy Isehara, Tenjin Chuo, Shiobara, and Kurume Medical University front—expanding to all specialized medical cooperation pharmacies within the company, and eventually to all pharmacies.
Three Pillars of Support
The sum of our efforts rests on three main pillars designed to assist patients and educate the community:
1.
Integration of Specialized Care and Products: Each participating pharmacy will have pharmacists trained in appearance care, blending their medical expertise with knowledge of supportive products from FANCL, a skincare company. They will provide comprehensive management and advice relating to chemotherapy side effects, as well as create a trusted resource for skin care during treatment.
2.
Facilitating Consultation and Access to Financial Aid: By establishing private consultation areas and working closely with local healthcare and cancer support centers, these pharmacies will create a safe space for patients to seek help. They aim to guide patients through administrative processes and connect them with financial aid opportunities for necessary medical products.
3.
Community Building to Maintain Quality of Life: Through events like cancer dialogue cafes, we strive to foster a community for patients to connect and uplift each other, supporting their quality of life during and after treatment. Awareness initiatives for their families and local residents will also be a high priority.
Starting this fall, the pharmacies will hold events focused on appearance care. The Tenjin Chuo location will host a workshop in partnership with FANCL, focusing on makeup and skin care experiences.
As advancements in cancer treatment provide new avenues for social reintegration and quality of life improvement, Sogo Medical Group remains dedicated to its role as a healthcare ally, working towards a society where coexistence with cancer is a reality, and nurturing vibrant local communities.
The group is also enhancing health-support functions to promote everyday wellness, with certified training programs being implemented under collaboration with FANCL. Plans are underway to certify more community members as health advisers, further strengthening the foundation for proactive health management.
Through these initiatives, Sogo Medical Group aims to transform pharmacies into universally accessible resources that provide support beyond illness and during healthy times, underscoring our commitment to sustaining health and well-being in our communities.
