Koizumi Yakumo, born in 1850 in Greece, was originally named Lafcadio Hearn. He was raised in a multicultural environment, with a father who was an Irish Army doctor. After receiving his education in England and France, he moved to America in 1869, where he pursued a career in journalism. His journey took him to Japan in 1890, and after marrying and establishing himself as a lecturer on English literature, he became an influential figure in Japanese literature, adopting Japanese citizenship in 1895 and renaming himself Koizumi Yakumo.
