Helsinki Design Week and Habitare: A Celebration of Creativity and Collaboration

In Helsinki, known as the happiest city in the world, design is not just a concept but an integral part of life. As summer comes to a close, two significant events, Helsinki Design Week (HDW) and Habitare, gather designers, companies, and audiences from around the globe to celebrate creativity.

An Overview of the Events

From August 28 to September 6, 2026, the city will come alive with HDW, the largest festival of design and architecture in the Nordic region, and Habitare, which occurs from September 2 to 6. As these two pivotal events collide, they’ll illuminate Helsinki as a thriving design hub.

Habitare will take place at Messukeskus, the Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre, featuring design companies, professionals, and diverse audiences. Meanwhile, HDW will extend beyond traditional venues, spilling into studios, cultural institutions, and public spaces throughout the city. Together, they highlight the diverse design landscape of Helsinki and foster essential connections among creators and communities.

Themes that Inspire Connection

This year, the events center around themes that encourage dialogue and fresh perspectives. The theme for HDW is "The Oncoming Other," inviting exploration of what emerges from interactions among individuals, concepts, and environments. On the flip side, Habitare's theme, "Plot Twists," prompts participants to draw inspiration from the capricious nature of life and design.

Kari Korkman, founder of HDW, emphasizes the vital role of collaboration in the creative industry, stating, "The creative sector does not emerge within closed systems but through connections between people. When creators, audiences, funders, media, and the city meet regularly, resilience begins to form as the possibility to renew, adapt, and imagine the future together."

Tanja Pasila, Business Lead at Habitare, adds that Finnish design holds significant international interest, and these events aim to enhance the industry's visibility and promote business growth in the creative sector through meaningful encounters.

A Collaborative Vision for Helsinki

In 2026, HDW and the City of Helsinki are collaborating more intensely than ever. This two-year partnership focuses on enhancing the city center through innovative design, culture, and urban planning. One initiative includes the opening of the HDW Lab on Aleksanterinkatu, which will serve as a space for workshops, bringing together decision-makers and city residents to collaboratively envision the future of the city's center.

Another pivotal aspect of this collaboration is the Helsinki Design Award, established in 2022 to honor individuals, teams, or organizations making significant contributions to Helsinki’s urban landscape.

Improving Daily Life Through Design

In Helsinki, design transcends mere aesthetics, influencing the development of services, public spaces, and urban districts. In July, five significant sites in Helsinki — including Finlandia Hall and the Aalto House — were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of Aalto Works, highlighting a legacy of modern architecture that prioritizes human wellbeing alongside innovative design.
