Introduction
On April 10, 2026, Iwata Inc., based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, will launch its latest typeface,
Teido Sho, inspired by the renowned calligrapher Zheng Daoxiao from China's Northern Wei dynasty. This new font is set to elevate contemporary digital typography while honoring a rich historic legacy.
The Inspiration Behind Teido Sho
The design of Teido Sho draws from an ancient stone inscription located in Yungang, China, created approximately 1500 years ago. This stone tablet showcases the rustic beauty of Zheng Daoxiao's calligraphy, exuding a natural and distinctly individual style that has been rejuvenated in today's digital medium.
Zheng Daoxiao's writing is characterized by its simplicity and warmth, qualities that are thoughtfully preserved in the digital typeface. Renowned calligrapher
Ooba Kisei has contributed approximately 9,000 characters to the new font, reinterpreting ancient text for modern-day use.
A Blend of Tradition and Modern Design
The Teido Sho typeface embodies a striking balance between grandeur and charm, making it ideal for a wide range of applications, including book titles, historical and cultural content, as well as subtitling for films and games. The unique aesthetics of this font—featuring elements that reflect the natural weathering of stone and a tactile quality reminiscent of the medium—allow it to transform digital text into a warm, organic experience.
