APM Terminals Elizabeth Embraces Electrification with 96 Electric Terminal Trucks

In a significant leap towards sustainability, APM Terminals Elizabeth has committed to modernizing its operations by placing an order for 96 electric terminal trucks from Orange EV. This deal stands as a historic commitment to electrification within the port sector, marking one of the largest orders for zero-emission terminal trucks to date.

The announcement was made following an official signing ceremony at APM Terminals' facility located in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey. This move builds on the success of Orange EV's previous expansion at their Los Angeles site at Pier 400, where a trial involving 20 trucks resulted in an additional 40 units being ordered, cumulatively bringing the fleet size to 60. Such developments suggest a broader trend in which port operators are transitioning from testing electric trucks to implementing them across their entire fleets.

Kurt Neutgens, CEO of Orange EV, shared insights into this substantial order: “This order, in conjunction with the earlier Pier 400 acquisition, signifies a pivotal change in the port industry as operators transition beyond pilots and testing phases. The electric trucks, known as the HUSK-e® XP units, are specially designed for handling heavy loads at port and terminal operations, boasting a robust capacity of moving up to 180,000 lbs. Thanks to their large 310-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, these vehicles feature the most advanced battery systems available in Orange EV's lineup.

APM Terminals’ decision reflects a strategic procurement approach that prioritizes long-term value. Factors taken into account include performance metrics, uptime, prior electric vehicle experience, availability of spare parts, and service response standards—rather than merely evaluating upfront costs.

Orange EV has established itself as a leader in the manufacturing of zero-emission terminal trucks in North America, achieving impressive uptime averages of over 97%. To date, the company has logged more than 14 million hours and 33 million miles of operational service across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.

The recent deal at APM Terminals Port Elizabeth matches another notable order, where Greenwich Terminals announced a commitment to 24 electric trucks intended for their Packer Avenue Marine Terminal in South Philadelphia. This initiative aims to transition towards an all-electric fleet, involving the retirement of existing diesel-powered vehicles. Together, these contracts underscore a significant shift in the industry, where the electrification of yard operations is no longer a fleeting experiment but rather an imminent reality.
