Recognizing and Addressing Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse is a serious issue that transcends demographics, afflicting individuals regardless of their gender, income, race, or religious background. According to alarming statistics,
one in three women and
one in four men in the United States have faced physical, emotional, or psychological abuse from intimate partners. The consequences extend beyond individual suffering; they affect entire families and communities.
Abuse often hides in plain sight — whether it be in boardrooms, bedrooms, or backyards. It erodes trust, identity, and the well-being of families, leaving scars that can last a lifetime. This is why the
STAR Network Foundation has passionately launched
Scars to STARs Day 2025, set for
May 16, 2025, as part of Mental Health Awareness Month.
A Global Movement for Healing
Scars to STARs Day is designed as a
global virtual summit open to all individuals who have been affected by toxic relationships and are prepared to begin their healing journey. Dr. Jamie Huysman, founder of the STAR Network Foundation and an expert in trauma recovery, emphasizes that “this day is for the unheard.” The event strives to dismantle the isolation that abusive relationships often impose.
Among the statistics conveying the urgency of this cause are the disturbing facts presented:
one in seven children have witnessed domestic violence, often before the age of ten, and over
five million men in the U.S. fall victim to domestic abuse each year, many enduring their pain quietly.
Not Just an Event, but a Lifeline
Scars to STARs Day represents more than just an event; it epitomizes a movement aimed at fostering healing across all genders, ages, and cultures. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from distinguished speakers, including:
- - The Honorable Patrick J. Kennedy – A mental health pioneer and advocate
- - Marjorie Morrison – SHRM's Executive in Residence for Mental Health
- - Richard Grannon – International STAR Ambassador and trauma educator
- - Jennifer Libby – Teen mental health advocate and founder of Promly
Furthermore, the summit will present the
STAR NeuroLeadership Award to Kennedy, a symbol of transformation from brokenness to beauty, carefully crafted by Ben Owen Pottery and Lakeside Pottery using the traditional Japanese art of
kintsugi. This serves as a profound reminder that healing can arise from the cracks of trauma.
