Innovative $12 Million Funding to Revolutionize Math Education with Free Curriculum

Transforming Education with Cognitive Science

The Modern Classrooms Project, a non-profit dedicated to enhancing math instruction, has announced an impressive funding round of $12 million, led by the Skeebo Foundation. This initiative aims to develop a comprehensive Tier 1 math curriculum that is rooted in cognitive science principles and will be available to anyone who wishes to utilize it, completely free of charge. The curriculum is set for a summer 2027 launch for middle school students, with a high school version to follow in summer 2028.

The Current State of Math Education in America

For over a decade, the performance of American students in math has been on the decline. In the 2024 Nation's Report Card, a staggering 72% of eighth graders scored below proficient in math, indicating a significant educational gap. This situation is particularly dire for students who were already struggling, as they have fallen further behind during this period. As noted by Kareem Farah, CEO and Co-Founder of Modern Classrooms Project and a former high school math teacher, there's a pressing need for a curriculum that directly integrates cognitive science into the teaching of math.

What Makes This Curriculum Different?

The curriculum will leverage decades of cognitive science research to provide an effective learning framework. Every lesson will feature a systematic design: it will begin with whole-group fluency, followed by explicit instruction in a new skill, accompanied by guided and blocked practice. After a skill check, spaced practice will ensure previous concepts are revisited, fostering retention and mastery. This method assures that skills are appropriately assessed and revisited multiple times throughout the year.

Moreover, there will be two distinct modalities for implementation. The primary version will be paper-based, focusing on traditional methods where educators lead the class with physical materials. Alternatively, a technology-enabled pathway will cater to those interested in integrating digital elements into their teaching. This dual approach is intended to address varied classroom dynamics, allowing for differentiated learning based on student mastery levels.

Access and Community Engagement

The beauty of this initiative lies in its commitment to offering free and publicly available instructional materials for both students and teachers. The curriculum will be aligned with educational standards and made easy to print and modify. Modern Classrooms Project not only aims to enhance math learning but is also keen on building a collaborative community. They are reaching out to teachers eager to test prototypes, schools interested in piloting the curriculum, and researchers willing to evaluate its impact on educational outcomes.

In the upcoming weeks, the organization plans to unveil a research advisory board consisting of cognitive scientists, mathematicians, and education experts who will ensure the curriculum adheres to the cutting-edge developments in educational research.

Join the Movement

Educators, students, and families alike are invited to get involved. The Modern Classrooms Project emphasizes that true educational reform occurs in partnership, and they are keen to enlist collaborators who share their vision of a more effective and inclusive education system.
