The Impact of Product Discoverability on Unplanned Purchases in E-Commerce

Understanding Unplanned Purchases in E-Commerce

A recent survey conducted by DG Business Technology (DGBT), a member of the Digital Garage Group, has highlighted the significant role that product discoverability plays in unplanned purchases among e-commerce users. The survey, which targeted regular online shoppers, revealed that an impressive 66.8% of respondents have made unplanned purchases simply due to the ease of finding products on e-commerce platforms.

Background of the Study

According to a report by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the BtoC e-commerce market in Japan is expected to expand substantially, growing from 22.7 trillion yen in 2022 to 24.8 trillion yen in 2023. As consumers increasingly rely on various e-commerce sites for their shopping needs, businesses face the challenge of standing out in a competitive landscape that also includes pressures related to pricing and shipping costs.

In this context, ensuring a smooth product discovery experience has emerged as critical for improving conversion rates (CVR) and encouraging repeat purchases. DGBT conducted the study to better understand consumer behavior concerning product discovery and the triggers for unplanned purchases.

Survey Highlights

Shopping Behavior

The survey found that 68.9% of participants engage in 'purposeful buying,' where they decide on products before visiting a site. Nonetheless, even within this group, 63.6% reported making unplanned purchases facilitated by a good product discovery experience.

Challenges in Product Discovery

A staggering 71.9% of respondents admitted to abandoning their shopping efforts because they could not find the desired products. This statistic underscores the frequent opportunity losses experienced by e-commerce sites, even among users who have specific intentions when visiting.

Factors Leading to Unplanned Purchases

Several elements triggered unplanned acquisitions: 1) Price benefits (66.5%), 2) Unexpected encounters with preferred items (55.3%), and 3) Positive reviews (29.9%). These factors emphasize the importance of effective product displays and information in driving impulse purchases.

The Dual Nature of Recommendations

While the survey indicated a strong demand for precise recommendations—highlighting that well-timed suggestions can lead to purchases—39.9% of respondents also expressed frustration with unsolicited or irrelevant recommendations.

Conclusion

The data reveals a valuable insight: despite existing frustrations in product discovery, a well-designed e-commerce experience can lead to a considerable increase in unplanned purchases. In an environment where price reductions can compromise margins, enhancing user experience through effective product discovery is essential. This is particularly important as consumers expect more from e-commerce platforms, searching for opportunities to uncover hidden gems or items that resonate with their tastes.

Through its NaviPlus series—a marketing solution with over 800 implementations—DGBT is positioned to aid e-commerce businesses in optimizing their sites for product discoverability while maintaining profitability. The key to boosting sales and enhancing average order values lies in creating enjoyable shopping experiences that prioritize consumer satisfaction and reduce abandonment rates.

The findings of this survey not only underscore the importance of enhancing product discovery experiences but also paint a vital picture for the future of e-commerce in a bustling marketplace.

Closing Thoughts

As product discovery becomes an increasingly pivotal factor in driving unplanned purchases, e-commerce businesses must prioritize improving these experiences to prevent consumer drop-off and harness the opportunities for additional sales. With user preferences constantly evolving, the focus on strategic, user-centric design will be paramount for success in this competitive landscape.
