NEU Battery Materials Secures $7.6 Million to Revolutionize Lithium Supply Chain and Expand LFP Recycling Efforts

NEU Battery Materials Secures $7.6 Million Funding

In a significant stride towards sustainability in the battery industry, NEU Battery Materials, a company based in Singapore, has successfully closed an impressive funding round of $7.6 million. This oversubscribed capital injection was co-led by Shift4Good, a global venture capital platform focusing on decarbonization and resilience in transport and energy, alongside SGInnovate, a governmental backer that supports deep tech innovations in Singapore.

This recent funding marks a pivotal moment for NEU as it transitions from technology development to full-scale industrial production, particularly focusing on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery recycling. Their new facility, located in Singapore, boasts a production capability of 1,300 tons per year, a remarkable leap towards their goal of creating sustainable lithium supply chains.

The funding round attracted not only new investors such as Lotus Singapore Group and M7 Holdings but also saw the continued support from existing investors including Paragon Ventures I. This expansion in funding could not be more timely, as there is a skyrocketing global demand for LFP batteries, which currently represent over 90% of energy storage systems and more than 55% of electric vehicle batteries, according to estimates from the International Energy Agency.

With worldwide battery deployments increasing, there is an urgent need for scalable recycling solutions that can bolster industrial independence and enhance the security of critical lithium supply chains. Bryan Oh, CEO and Co-founder of NEU Battery Materials, elaborated on the company's vision, stating, “Our aim is to create cleaner and more resilient lithium supply chains to support the ongoing energy transition. The establishment of our Singapore plant is a crucial milestone in this mission, and the funding will enable us to scale up our modular LFP recycling technology.”

NEU’s innovative approach includes the world's first patented process that utilizes electrochemical redox targeting technology specifically designed for LFP battery recycling. This process efficiently recovers lithium through methods that are not only sustainable but also cost-effective. Unlike traditional recycling techniques such as hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy, NEU's technology considerably lowers emissions, boasting reductions of up to 83%. The entire process is powered by water and electricity and employs regenerative chemicals that minimize waste and environmental impact.

Sebastien Guillaud, Co-founder and Managing Partner at Shift4Good, commented on the importance of this endeavor, stating, “LFP battery recycling represents both a decarbonization goal and an essential strategy for industrial sovereignty. NEU is now entering a transformative phase of industrial scalability that is instrumental in building more resilient supply chains.”

With the influx of capital and the operational launch of its new plant, NEU Battery Materials is gearing up to increase its production capabilities while simultaneously lowering costs. This initiative is rooted in a rigorous R&D roadmap designed to achieve key technical milestones ahead of schedule, laying a robust groundwork for future international operations and commercial growth.

In conclusion, as the demand for LFP batteries continues to rise, NEU Battery Materials is poised to take a central role in ensuring that recycling processes keep pace with production needs. With strategic investments and innovations, the path toward resilient lithium supply chains appears brighter than ever.
