Survey Reveals Shift in Consumer Trust Among Young Buyers During Holiday Season
Shifting Trust Among Young Consumers During the Holidays
As the holiday season approaches, a concerning trend emerges from the latest Validity Consumer Survey: nearly 50% of younger buyers, particularly from Generation Z, are likely to end the holiday period with diminished trust in brands that inundate their inboxes with promotional emails. The data, collected by Validity, a leader in Enterprise AI solutions for digital marketers, reveals that the excessive volume of emails outweighs the value they provide, leading to a fundamental shift in consumer-brand relationships.
Volume Over Value
The survey, part of Validity's Holiday 2026 Consumer Research, indicates that nearly one-third of recipients feel that the sheer volume of holiday emails is enough to prompt them to unsubscribe. This phenomenon is not limited to retail marketing; almost all sectors sending emails during the holidays are implicated in saturating consumers’ inboxes. An overwhelming 44% of respondents report receiving more promotional emails during this time, while 36% admit they have overlooked essential non-promotional messages due to the clutter. This not only negatively impacts consumer trust but also presents a challenge for marketers trying to maintain brand loyalty.
Trust: A Fragile Currency
A striking 47% of consumers believe that their existing trust in a brand significantly influences whether they open its holiday-related communications. Surprisingly, this sentiment surpasses the impact of discounts and promotions, which only 39% of respondents identified as motivating factors. Interestingly, once an email is opened, 42% emphasize that exclusive deals and promotions are the content they value the most. This illustrates that while initial trust leads to opens, the ongoing value of content determines consumer engagement.
The trust consumers place in brands is delicate; about 25% report that email overload has led them to trust specific brands less, with these figures climbing even higher among Gen Z, where nearly half acknowledge decreased trust. This decline in loyalty could prove costly for brands aiming to capture a younger demographic that is on the brink of their peak spending years.
Consumer Preferences for Communication
Cynthia Price, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Validity, notes, “Holiday volume doesn’t just strain retail marketers — it strains the entire inbox ecosystem that every sender depends on.” The findings emphasize that brands must respect consumer attention to stay relevant. An interesting observation is that while consumers are not asking for a complete break from promotional content, 22% express the desire for an
