Grand Opening of Baltimore’s Literacy Hub
On September 5, 2026, the city of Baltimore witnessed a significant moment as Our Kids Read inaugurated its expanded Baltimore Literacy Hub located at 418 E. 33rd Street. This innovative space has been termed a "3rd space" — a community hub designed to foster literacy among families and children in the area.
The Baltimore Literacy Hub, funded through generous contributions from various local foundations and the public, offers a remarkable inventory of over
60,000 free diverse books. In addition to local distributions, close to
200,000 books are expected to be shipped nationwide, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to improving literacy for low-income families.
Thanks to an extraordinary $3 million in-kind donation comprising
over 300,000 books, families from Baltimore and beyond can access vital reading materials without any financial burden. At the grand opening event, attendees were warmly welcomed to tour the facility, interact with community partners, and learn about the various literacy programs offered by Our Kids Read. Children excitedly received up to
10 free books each, contributing to home libraries and enhancing their access to informative literature. As a part of a collaboration with the
Travis Manion Foundation, the first 75 families received backpacks filled with essential school supplies — a small gesture intended to support educational needs.
The influence of the Baltimore Literacy Hub is anticipated to reach far beyond the local vicinity. With its increased book inventory and shipping capabilities, Our Kids Read has plans to send an additional
100,000 books to children and families across the nation. This expanded effort aims to bolster community support for schools, non-profit organizations, and families, ensuring that access to reading materials is not limited to those in the immediate area.
In an exciting development, Our Kids Read has partnered with renowned international star and philanthropist Chris "Ludacris" Bridges to advocate for literacy in underprivileged communities. An initiative kicked off where they aim to distribute
over 2,000 copies of Ludacris' children's book, "Daddy and Me and the Rhyme to Be," across the country. All attendees at the Baltimore Literacy Hub were treated to a special welcoming message from Ludacris, showcased through a video presentation, amplifying the hub's theme of community engagement and literacy empowerment.
This grand opening signifies a step forward in addressing educational disparities faced by low-income families in Baltimore and beyond. Our Kids Read's commitment and structured programs underscore the importance of accessibility of books and literacy resources, truly making literacy a reachable goal for every child. By creating such supportive spaces, organizations like Our Kids Read pave the way for a brighter, literate future for generations to come.
