Huawei DigiTruck Kenya Celebrates the Graduation of 290 New Digital Skills Graduates

Huawei DigiTruck Kenya Celebrates New Graduates

On March 17, 2025, in Homa Bay, Kenya, a momentous occasion unfolded as the Huawei DigiTruck project proudly conferred diplomas on 290 young individuals who have successfully completed a six-week training program aimed at enhancing digital competencies. This initiative falls under Huawei's digital inclusion effort known as TECH4ALL, designed to equip participants with essential digital skills necessary for navigating today's technology-driven world.

The training saw 143 women and 147 men engaging in a comprehensive curriculum that encompassed essential areas such as computer skills, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and cybersecurity. Raymond Omollo, CBS, the Principal Secretary of the Kenyan Department of Homeland Security and National Administration, emphasized the crucial nature of digital skills in today's economy, stating, "Digital skills are no longer optional; they are a necessity. Whether it's starting an online business, remote work, or leveraging technology, digital literacy opens up new opportunities."

The DigiTruck, which operates on solar energy and is equipped with workstations, internet connectivity, and digital tools, serves as a mobile classroom designed to reach even the most remote and underserved communities. Since its inception in Kenya in 2019, the DigiTruck initiative has provided free training to over 6,030 youth across 36 counties, focusing particularly on unemployed youth, girls, and women. Notably, last year alone, 906 of the 1,648 trainees were women, showcasing the program’s commitment to gender balance.

Adam Lane, Huawei’s Director of Government Affairs and Policies, expressed pride in achieving gender parity among trainees, stressing the importance of digital skills for everyone in today’s economy. "In addition to our university partnerships with over 60 institutions, we manage the DigiTruck to reach young individuals outside formal education and in rural areas. Digital skills are truly needed by all."

The DigiTruck project is a collaborative effort involving Huawei, Kenya's ICT authority operating under the Ministry of Information, Communications, and Digital Economy, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the National Youth Council, Kenya's National Innovation Agency, Safaricom, and Computers for Schools Kenya, among other local partners. This project aligns with Kenya's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and Digital Superhighway Agenda, reflecting the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide, fostering the training of tomorrow's digital leaders, and developing a creative economy.

The formation carried out in Homa Bay included an innovation competition aimed at encouraging participants to formulate practical solutions for community challenges. Winners of the competition developed digital solutions to improve healthcare delivery, enhance the lives of local stone quarry workers, and raise awareness about online safety and cybersecurity.

The DigiTruck graduates are expected to drive an increase in enrollments in ICT courses, foster digital entrepreneurship, and promote the adoption of digital technologies in rural regions. As part of Huawei’s broader initiative Skills on Wheels, the DigiTruck program had reached over 110,000 individuals across 20 countries by the end of 2024, with mobile classrooms traveling more than 50,000 kilometers.
