Grand Canyon University Appoints James L. Williams to Lead Innovative Law School Initiative

Grand Canyon University (GCU) has officially named James L. Williams as the inaugural dean of its new College of Law, a landmark step in its mission to innovate legal education by integrating rigorous academic training with Christian values. Williams, a veteran attorney with deep ties to the Phoenix community, is set to build a law school that not only imparts legal knowledge but also instills a sense of purpose in its students to serve society.

According to GCU President Brian Mueller, the selection of Williams aligns with their vision of creating a unique educational framework that combines legal excellence, mentorship, and a commitment to social service. "We are not simply building another law school," Mueller stated. "What makes James uniquely suited for this role is how he synergizes legal acumen with a passion for teaching and mentoring based on his Christian faith."

Williams, who has spent 18 years practicing law in Arizona, views this appointment as an opportunity to redraw the contours of legal education. He aims to cultivate a new generation of attorneys who can practice at the highest levels while holding steadfast to their commitment to justice and community service. "GCU will challenge students academically and prepare them professionally while nurturing their understanding of their work's purpose and responsibility," Williams explained.

With the inaugural College of Law set to welcome its first class as early as fall 2027, the initiative is still subject to various regulatory approvals, including those from the Supreme Court of Arizona and the American Bar Association. Williams is optimistic about this endeavor, confident that it will provide a solid foundation for future lawyers grounded in both legal principles and their Christian faith.

Williams’ career trajectory is filled with accolades and service to the legal community. He has held numerous leadership positions, including the presidency of the Phoenix chapter of the Christian Legal Society. His approach to law has always been intertwined with his faith; he emphasizes that the profession is not merely a job but a calling to serve others. "The law influences every aspect of society. Lawyers have an extraordinary opportunity and responsibility to shape the culture around them," Williams remarked.

His commitment to fostering the next generation of legal professionals extends to his extensive experience mentoring law students through participation in legal education programs such as Arizona State University's mock trial competitions. Many of his former students, including current Assistant Attorney General Justin Larson, credit Williams for their professional successes, acknowledging his dedication to their development as future lawyers.

Additionally, Williams serves as an elder and worship leader at New City Church in Phoenix, contributing to his belief that Christian lawyers have vital roles in furthering justice and truth in a complex social landscape. "If we can send graduates into various facets of society equipped with that mindset, the impact can transcend traditional legal confines," he stated.

Various testimonials from colleagues and former students highlight Williams' integrity, mentoring spirit, and professional expertise. Mark Schmitt, one of his long-time colleagues, remarked on Williams' exceptional legal skills and his willingness to invest in others, asserting that GCU could not have found a better candidate for its first dean. Meanwhile, others in the legal community echoed similar sentiments regarding his capacity to inspire and lead future lawyers.

The creation of GCU’s College of Law represents an exciting chapter for both the university and the legal profession in Arizona. With Williams at the helm, this innovative institution is poised to cultivate lawyers who can balance exceptional advocacy with unwavering integrity and faith. By grounding its pedagogy in Christian values while focusing on academic rigor, GCU aims to transform the landscape of legal education, preparing future attorneys to not only succeed in their careers but also to make a positive impact on their communities.

As GCU embarks on this ambitious journey, the legal community watches closely, eager to see how this new law school will develop and the unique attorneys it will produce for years to come.
