Southern Glazer's Oklahoma Workers Unite with Teamsters for Stronger Representation

Southern Glazer's Oklahoma Workers Unite with Teamsters

In a significant move toward better working conditions, more than 115 drivers and warehouse employees at Southern Glazer's facilities across Oklahoma have voted to join Teamsters Local 516. This decision aligns with a broader trend of union organization among Southern Glazer's workforce throughout the southern United States, highlighting a strong desire for a more powerful voice in the workplace.

The vote for union representation reflects workers' determination to secure improved pay, benefits, and overall respect in their jobs. "Workers across the south understand the difference that Teamsters can make, and they are taking action," stated Jeff Padellaro, Director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference. "This victory exemplifies the power of solidarity and the belief that, together, we can achieve significant change."

With the acquisition of complete ownership of its Oklahoma operations by Southern Glazer's, employees recognized the need for a union to address long-standing grievances. Despite a concerted effort by management to dismantle unionization efforts—including an aggressive anti-union campaign—the workers remained resolute in their commitment to organizing through Teamsters.

"This group never backed down, even when facing considerable pressure from management," remarked Kelly Swon, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 516. "They sought to amplify their voices at work, and that determination will carry over as they negotiate their first contract. We look forward to standing by them in this ongoing fight."

Darius Reese, a warehouse worker who is now part of Local 516, expressed the sentiment shared among his peers: "We work hard for Southern Glazer’s every day and want to be respected in our workplace. Seeing other locations transform their jobs into viable careers inspired us, and now we are committed to doing the same. We are proud to join Teamsters and are eager to present our voices at the negotiation table."

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters is a major labor organization representing approximately 1.3 million workers in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. This latest organizing effort in Oklahoma demonstrates the growing momentum among workers seeking greater representation and rights in the workplace.
