Supporting Autistic Children in Kherson Amid Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine

Supporting Autistic Children in Kherson Amid Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine

For four long years, Kherson, Ukraine has endured the devastating impacts of war. Families raising children with autism are living under continuous threat, navigating life amidst daily shelling and the fear that pervades their environment. Despite this bleak reality, an alliance of parents, united under the name "Autistic Special Space," is determined to provide essential emotional and economic support to their children.

On April 2, coinciding with World Autism Awareness Day, the Tokyo Autism Association received a heartfelt message from Kherson detailing the ongoing challenges faced by these families. In response, a fundraising initiative has been launched to directly support their needs, providing a lifeline in these perilous times.

The Unrelenting Challenges faced by Families in Kherson

Reports indicate that the danger in Kherson has escalated, with the frontline of Russian aggression threatening to encroach upon civilian areas even more. These families reflect resilience, as they work tirelessly to create safe spaces for their autistic children, allowing them to engage in activities that would normally bring joy and stability, despite the overwhelming circumstances.

Children with autism often exhibit traits such as anxiety and a need for routine, making it crucial for their families to foster an environment that minimizes distress. Many family members have turned to social media to document uplifting moments, offering glimpses of joy amid the adversity, further illustrating their commitment to maintaining an element of normalcy for their children.

Continuation of Support Activities

Recognizing the immediate need for aid, the Tokyo Autism Association began fundraising in 2024, raising a total of ¥145,371 (approximately $924.89 post-fees) to send directly to their Ukrainian counterparts. This past support has enabled local organizations in Kherson to continue their efforts in promoting well-being and education for autistic children, despite their challenging living conditions.

Families congregate in shelters to foster a sense of community, where children can interact, learn, and receive much-needed psychological support. Through twice-weekly online meetings, they explore various activities such as sports, art, and games, providing an essential outlet for creativity and emotional release.

However, the ongoing conflict has severely limited access to medical services, and many children require healthcare that is often inaccessible due to long waiting lists or private treatment costs. Therefore, the gathering of funds to support healthcare and well-being initiatives remains a top priority for these families.

The Initiative for a Healing Retreat

In light of these struggles, the parent group is advocating for a healing retreat in a safe, natural environment, offering the children a rare opportunity for relaxation and rejuvenation. This initiative aims to restore not only their well-being but also to help them reconnect with a sense of normalcy amidst chaos.

The support from Australia and wider international communities has shown positive results in sustaining the hope of Kherson's families. Contributions, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in their attempt to regain stability and happiness.

As we move forward, the Tokyo Autism Association encourages individuals to join the fundraising campaign, allowing the families in Kherson to receive the necessary support they require. Donations can be made via banks and other financial services, with details outlined on their platform.

The parental determination and activism shine through as they strive to uplift their children and provide them with the resources needed to thrive, even in the darkest of circumstances. If you wish to help make a difference, please reach out—your kindness is a beacon of hope for those holding on in Kherson.
