Collaboration Between Synopsys and GlobalFoundries



In an exciting development for engineering education, Synopsys, Inc. and GlobalFoundries have launched a pioneering pilot program aimed at enhancing university curricula with practical chip design experiences. This new initiative, which focuses on transitioning from 'chip design to tapeout', seeks to provide students with hands-on training in semiconductor manufacturing and design, crucial skills for the next generation of engineers.

A New Frontier in Education



With advancements in technology playing a vital role in academic research, this collaboration is set to reshape how engineering disciplines are taught worldwide. This initiative not only aligns with the missions of both companies’ research and academic programs but also addresses the growing need for skilled professionals in the semiconductor industry. By lowering the cost barriers to custom silicon, the program creates unprecedented opportunities for universities to turn their design concepts into tangible silicon products.

The pilot program will be implemented in over 40 select universities globally this fall, utilizing a sponsored open-source 180MCU curriculum. Participants will gain access to advanced Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and a variety of training options leveraging Synopsys' Cloud design platform. Once the designs are finalized, GlobalFoundries will manufacture the chips through their GlobalShuttle Multi-Project Wafer Program, which consolidates designs from different institutions onto a single wafer for production.

Dr. Patrick Haspel, executive director of Synopsys’ Academic Research Alliances (SARA), emphasized the transformation this program will bring. "This collaboration will empower students with practical, hands-on experience using advanced tools and technologies – skills that are critical to drive innovation in the semiconductor industry. Together, we're not just teaching design – we're building the next generation of engineers who will shape the future of silicon." This course aims to equip students with the necessary skills to excel in the semiconductor field, addressing the needs of an evolving workforce.

In the next phase of the initiative, academia will directly integrate these technologies into their curriculum, allowing students to collaborate on real design projects in class. Professors will receive training on how to effectively lead these innovative courses, culminating in a shuttle run of manufactured chips returned to students for testing in subsequent semesters.
