Nicklaus Children's Hospital Uses Innovatively Developed Dialysis Machine
In an exciting development for pediatric healthcare, Nicklaus Children's Hospital has become the first medical center in Florida to utilize the state-of-the-art Carpediem™ Cardio Renal Pediatric Dialysis Emergency Machine, created by Mozarc Medical. This pioneering device significantly enhances the capabilities of dialysis treatment specifically tailored to infants suffering from acute kidney injury and fluid overload issues.
A Groundbreaking Leap in Pediatric Care
The Carpediem machine is designed with a miniaturized platform suited for the smallest patients, capable of delivering Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) to infants weighing between 2.5 to 10 kilograms. This innovative equipment is a game-changer, representing a leap forward for healthcare providers treating fragile newborns who require intricate dialysis procedures.
Dr. Nicole M. Christin, who serves as the medical director of the dialysis unit at Nicklaus Children's Hospital and chief of pediatric nephrology, highlighted the device's advantages, stating, "CRRT treatments have been far more challenging in infants because dialysis equipment has not been perfectly suited for the care of the smallest and most fragile patients. The Carpediem system is a terrific advancement, designed expressly to meet the need of our youngest patients."
The system boasts an array of high-precision scales and sensors, allowing for stringent monitoring of fluid balance, blood leaks, and air bubbles throughout the dialysis process, thus enhancing patient safety and treatment efficacy. With these enhancements, the risk of complications during dialysis procedures is reduced considerably, promoting better outcomes for the infants receiving treatment.
Continued Commitment to Excellence
Nicklaus Children's Hospital operates at the forefront of pediatric medical advancements and has positioned itself as a regional referral center for newborns requiring intricate medical attention. The Carpediem device will be part of their Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which is specially designed to handle complex cases.
The hospital takes pride in its ongoing commitment to deliver exceptional care, making it a crucial healthcare resource for families in South Florida. Nicklaus Children's Hospital, which is non-profit and dedicated exclusively to pediatric healthcare, is consistently recognized for its excellence in various medical fields, being ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report since 2008.
With over 850 physicians, including more than 500 pediatric subspecialists, the hospital covers approximately 70% of children in the Miami market. The institution also hosts several admirable centers of excellence, such as the Helen Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute and the Nicklaus Children's Heart Institute, further showcasing its depth of service.
The introduction of the Carpediem machine marks another notable accomplishment in Nicklaus Children’s Hospital's extensive journey towards creating a safer and more successful environment for pediatric healthcare. Their innovative approach continues to set benchmarks in the field, reaffirming their motto: "Where Your Child Matters Most."
