Ashley Amirkhan of Sacred Heart Prep Receives Jefferson Scholarship for Academic Excellence

Ashley Amirkhan Awarded the Jefferson Scholarship

In an impressive display of academic excellence and community leadership, Ashley Amirkhan, a senior at Sacred Heart Preparatory (SHP) in Atherton, California, has been awarded the esteemed Jefferson Scholarship from the University of Virginia (UVA). This highly competitive merit scholarship, which is awarded only to a select few, will provide support for her studies at UVA starting this fall.

The Significance of the Jefferson Scholarship

The Jefferson Scholarship is one of the nation's most distinguished honors for high school students, recognizing outstanding capabilities in leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. The selection process is rigorous and multi-faceted, involving both regional nominations and intensive interviews. This year, over 2,500 students were nominated, with only 150 emerging as finalists partaking in interviews conducted by UVA alumni and faculty members.

Ashley Amirkhan stands out not only for her academic achievements but also for her commitment to service and extracurricular activities. An AP Scholar with Distinction, she has taken part in pre-college programs at prestigious institutions such as UCLA and Brown University, focusing on areas such as neuroscience, nanoscience, and medicine. Her academic journey includes serving as a dedicated student-researcher, during which she co-authored a research paper addressing deep-brain stimulation for early-onset Alzheimer's disease alongside a PhD student from Cambridge, leveraging opportunities provided by the Cambridge Scholars' Programme.

Shaping a Leader Despite Adversity

Joel Dobben, SHP's Director of College Counseling, aptly commented on her nomination, stating that it reflects both her exceptional leadership and her resilience. Amirkhan has faced significant challenges, notably injuries that concluded her elite diving career. However, she channeled her experiences into promoting wellness for student-athletes. As the CEO of GOAT Mentality, a Bay Area nonprofit organization, she provides crucial sports psychology resources to teenagers and has positively impacted over 10,000 students across 250 schools.

In addition, Ashley has volunteered her time to several social causes, including coaching adaptive gymnastics for children with special needs and leading social justice initiatives within SHP. Her commitment to these community service activities demonstrates her determination to give back and empower others.

An Inspired Future

Expressing her gratitude for the scholarship, Amirkhan reflected, "I'm honored to receive this scholarship, which reflects the values and mentorship I've received at SHP. The experiences here have shaped my resilience and purpose, which I will carry with me as I study human biology and neuroscience at UVA.”

Transitioning to college, she will join a vibrant community of 153 current Jefferson Scholars and over 1,000 alumni, all of whom share a commitment to academic excellence as well as community service. The Jefferson Scholarship covers the full cost of attending UVA for four years and includes enriching programs that offer opportunities for travel abroad, career networking, and leadership activities.
